IBM raises '13 outlook; Q2 earnings beat, revenue drops

By Nicola Leske

REUTERS - IBM (NYS:IBM) raised its full-year outlook on Wednesday based on cost cutting and a strong software pipeline.

International Business Machine Corp beat second-quarter earnings estimates thanks to growth in its mainframe and software units, but missed on revenue.

"In the first half, we've had strength in Latin America and the Middle East and Africa region, but declines in some of our larger markets like China and Australia have impacted the overall performance," Chief Financial Officer Mark Loughridge said on a call with analysts.

"As we look at the second half," he said, "we have some very, very distinct tailwinds."

He added IBM had the best services backlog growth in four years and a very strong software pipeline going into the second half.

The company's shares, which had been up after-hours nearly 3 percent, gave about half of that back to end all of Wednesday's New York trade up 1.25 percent at $197.01.

IBM said that excluding a $1 billion restructuring charge related to job cuts, it raised its non-GAAP earnings per share expectations for this year by 20 cents to at least $16.90.

The cuts were taken mainly outside of the United States, a spokesman said, adding about 60 percent were from IBM's services division and 20 percent each from its hardware and software segments.

IBM also said that a "substantial second-half gain" it was expecting from a divestiture in its previous EPS outlook "will not likely be achieved" by the end of 2013.

Loughridge did not give details apart from saying that the company was still in active discussions and that it would not sell too low or rush into a sale.

Nevertheless, he said, "fundamentally, whether we close a large divestiture this year or not, we'll not have any effect on our ability to achieve our 2015 objective of at least $20 per share on an all-in basis".

Earlier in the year news of talks between IBM and Lenovo over the sale of IBM's System X server business surfaced but were not confirmed by the companies.

Brian Marshall, an analyst at ISI Group, said the sale "is perhaps the last significant opportunity to optimize gross margins of the IBM product portfolio".

He estimated it could fetch $2 billion to $3 billion in a sale.

Total operating non-GAAP gross profit margin was 49.7 percent in the 2013 second quarter compared with 48.2 percent a year earlier.

The Armonk, N.Y.-based company said its quarterly non-GAAP income rose 3 percent, excluding a $1 billion restructuring charge, to $4.3 billion, or $3.91 a share, compared with $3.51 a year ago and analyst estimates of $3.77 a share, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

On a GAAP basis, earnings per share were $2.91, down 13 percent; net income was $3.2 billion, down 17 percent.

Revenue dropped 3 percent to $24.9 billion below average analyst expectations of $25.4 billion.

Adjusted for currency, software revenue was up 5 percent and its mainframe revenue rose 11 percent in the quarter. Currency negatively impacted overall revenue growth by about $500 million.

Loughridge said he expected a continued negative impact from currency through the year.

Several brokerages had cut their price targets for IBM in the past weeks on concerns over revenue growth and recent weaker performance by competitors Oracle (ORCL.N) and Accenture (NYS:ACN).

Analysts said the results were better than expected, especially after IBM posted a rare miss in its first quarter.

"After a first half that showed muted demand at best, you have a 20 cent raise excluding the workforce rebalancing, what is implied you are going to have strength in the higher margin software and services," said Edward Jones tech analyst Josh Olson.

Andrew Bartels, an analyst at Forrester Research, said IBM's strength in software demonstrated that its "strategic shift to focus on software is paying dividends".

"For the broader tech market perspective, software overall will continue to be one of the strongest tech segments in 2013," he added.

Facebook Photo Sharing Tricks

Sharing photos is probably the most popular activity on Facebook. Yet with new features being added all the time, you may not know all the ways you can access and share your own pics ? and those of others.

Trick #1 ? Download a photo from someone else?s page

This one?s easy, and you probably know it already: First, click on the image to see it full size, then right-click (or control-click)directly on the photo you want to download. Select ?Save image as? and download.

Trick #2 ? Download a photo from someone else?s page via your smartphone

??????On iPhones (and other iOS devices) tap the photo in your news feed so it goes full screen, then hold your finger on the picture for a few seconds. An option to ?save photo? will pop up. Once you choose that option, the picture will be saved in your camera roll.

??????On Android phones, it?s a little more complicated. Best option is to get an app (like FacebookPhotoSave or PicDownloader)to do the job. But you can click the menu button when viewing a Facebook picture, (then ?More? on some phones) and then ?Share.? You can then opt to save the pic to any image editing program you have installed on your phone ? or just email it to yourself.

Trick #3 ? Download an entire album on your computer

Downloading multiple images one by one is a pain ? much easier to grab an entire album. For that you need Pick&Zip.? You log in with your Facebook account, and it lists all your friends. Click on a friend, then browse that friend?s albums for the one you want to download.

Trick #4 ? Download a video

Pick&Zip also lets you download video posted on friends? pages using the same method: Log in to the Pick&Zip site with your Facebook account. Click on a friend?s name, then hit the ?Videos? tab to browse what you might download. This tool is extra handy since Facebook doesn?t let you download video directly through their site.

Trick #5 ? Share an album with people who aren?t on Facebook

Have you ever painstakingly put together an album, and then realized that a few people you?d like to share it with aren?t on Facebook ? like your parents? Not to worry; they can still absolutely access it.? Go to your album, click on the gear icon for settings, click ?get link,? and you can either copy and paste that link into an email or send it directly from Facebook. The person who receives it can click the link and ? without signing in ? see all the pics you?ve shared. Note: this trick only works for albums you?ve created, not for individual photos, and not even for images in albums that Facebook generates for you ? like your Timeline photos or Mobile Uploads. So if you want to share a batch of pictures with people not on Facebook, you do need to create an album of those images first.

Bonus Trick ?Enlarging Facebook images

Sure, you can always click on someone?s photo to see it big,but a lot of times, you just want a better view of someone?s post as you?re browsing or scrolling. A free extension for your Chrome or Firefox browser called Photozoom for Facebook can help. When your mouse hovers over a picture, the image automatically enlarges. One quibble with this tool ? with the default settings, this automatic enlargement happens immediately, which can be annoying, as the zoomed image may hide other items on the page you?re trying to view.Fortunately, it?s easy to change this setting. When you first open the tool, go to ?Advanced Settings.? I recommend a 1000 millisecond delay ? one full second.

B.C. couple in the lead on The Amazing Race Canada premiere

I can?t believe I?m saying this, but I actually watched the series premiere for The Amazing Race Canada last night (July 15). For those of you who aren?t slaves to the boob tube, The Amazing Race Canada is based on the U.S. reality show where teams of two are required to fulfil specific tasks while racing around the world. Think of it as one gigantic scavenger hunt that usually tests the relationships of those crazy enough to sign up.

In the Canadian version, the geographical scale of competition is limited to Canada. On the first episode, host Jon Montgomery (yes, the same guy who won a gold medal in skeleton during the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver) introduced the nine teams in Niagara Falls, Ontario, but it wasn?t before long that the competitors were jumping on planes to Kelowna, B.C., in search of Ogopogo in Lake Okanagan. The whole thing?s pretty hokey and looks like an hour-long advertisement for the Canadian Tourism Commission, but it?s a family show running in the summer, so the sweeping aerial shots and cheeseball music are to be expected.

Of the nine teams selected to compete from across the country, I was a tad disappointed to see only one representation from B.C.?and it?s of two self-described nouveau ?hippies?, Kristen Idiens and Darren Trapp, from Fairmont Hot Springs?go figure. Other competitors include a father-son duo from Winnipeg, married doctors from Montreal, gay cowboys from rural Alberta, and two pairs of sisters, a set of brothers, and an obvious bromance all from Ontario. Perhaps the most exciting team to compete is Hal Johnson and Joanne McLeod from BodyBreak fame! The Canadian fitness ?icons? who are now in their 50s even managed to pull out a ?keep fit and have fun? quote during the first episode.

But I digress. I?m a firm believer of cheering for your home team, so my loyalty is with the hippies, who managed to arrive in first place, which ended at Quail?s Gate winery at the conclusion of last night?s episode?high five! So to that I say, ?Race on, hippies, race on?.

The Amazing Race Canada airs on Monday at 9 p.m. PT on CTV.?

Russian-Chinese Naval Cooperation Will Continue, Commanders Say

At a press conference concluding the second and largest naval drill conducted by China and Russia in the Peter the Great Gulf near the city of Vladivostok, both commanders judged the exercise a success and indicated that they will become a permanent part of the regional security landscape in the Far East. "We have safely accomplished all the designed subjects under complex weather conditions," said Adm. Ding Yiping, the deputy commander of the PLA Navy. "According to primary evaluations, we did a great job." "The two countries made an in-depth discussion on deepening mutual cooperation, which had a great significance on their development and improvement," Ding said.

He was seconded by Admiral Leonid Sukhanov, the Deputy Chief of the Russian Navy Main Staff, the Russian commander in the exercise, who said that the two countries work together at any time to address maritime threats and to secure their countries. "Some countries believe our exercise is for regional stability while some countries hold different views, but I think that it has sent an example for the other countries in safeguarding regional security and each other's national interests," Sukhanov said. The importance attached to the drill by the Russian side was indicated by the presence of the Commander in Chief of the Russian Navy, Adm. Viktor Chirkov, who reviewed the fleet from the cruiser Varyag. Admiral Ding indicated that he had spoken to Admiral Chirkov regarding other joint maneuvers in the near future.
