B.C. couple in the lead on The Amazing Race Canada premiere

I can?t believe I?m saying this, but I actually watched the series premiere for The Amazing Race Canada last night (July 15). For those of you who aren?t slaves to the boob tube, The Amazing Race Canada is based on the U.S. reality show where teams of two are required to fulfil specific tasks while racing around the world. Think of it as one gigantic scavenger hunt that usually tests the relationships of those crazy enough to sign up.

In the Canadian version, the geographical scale of competition is limited to Canada. On the first episode, host Jon Montgomery (yes, the same guy who won a gold medal in skeleton during the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver) introduced the nine teams in Niagara Falls, Ontario, but it wasn?t before long that the competitors were jumping on planes to Kelowna, B.C., in search of Ogopogo in Lake Okanagan. The whole thing?s pretty hokey and looks like an hour-long advertisement for the Canadian Tourism Commission, but it?s a family show running in the summer, so the sweeping aerial shots and cheeseball music are to be expected.

Of the nine teams selected to compete from across the country, I was a tad disappointed to see only one representation from B.C.?and it?s of two self-described nouveau ?hippies?, Kristen Idiens and Darren Trapp, from Fairmont Hot Springs?go figure. Other competitors include a father-son duo from Winnipeg, married doctors from Montreal, gay cowboys from rural Alberta, and two pairs of sisters, a set of brothers, and an obvious bromance all from Ontario. Perhaps the most exciting team to compete is Hal Johnson and Joanne McLeod from BodyBreak fame! The Canadian fitness ?icons? who are now in their 50s even managed to pull out a ?keep fit and have fun? quote during the first episode.

But I digress. I?m a firm believer of cheering for your home team, so my loyalty is with the hippies, who managed to arrive in first place, which ended at Quail?s Gate winery at the conclusion of last night?s episode?high five! So to that I say, ?Race on, hippies, race on?.

The Amazing Race Canada airs on Monday at 9 p.m. PT on CTV.?
