Syria SNC to mull transitional government 'within weeks'

DUBAI (Reuters) - The head of the Syrian National Council (SNC), the main umbrella group for opponents of President Bashar al-Assad, said on Sunday that talks would be held within weeks to form a transitional government that would in time replace Assad's ministerial team.

Abdelbasset Sida, president of the SNC, said such a government would run the country between Assad's ousting and democratic elections. Most of its members would be drawn from the opposition, but some members of the current Assad government might also be included, he added.

"This government should come about before the fall (of Assad) so that it presents itself as an alternative for the next stage," Sida told Abu Dhabi-based Sky News Arabia television in an interview broadcast on Sunday.

"The committees that we have set up have their own schedules. Obviously, the matter should be concluded within weeks."

"There are some elements in the current regime who are not bloodstained, who were not part of major corruption cases. We will discuss (including them) with other parties, but there should be a national consensus to accept them."

However, criticism about the SNC's legitimacy may complicate its efforts to form a transitional government.

It clearly backs the Free Syrian Army, despite having not always overtly supported it in the past.

But it has sometimes struggled to overcome internal divisions and critics have accused the Istanbul-based organization of being out of touch, overly influenced by Turkey, and not fully representative of the opposition.

INITIAL INVOLVEMENT OF TLAS RULED OUT

Visiting Abu Dhabi to meet United Arab Emirates officials, Sida did not say when exactly a transitional government might be formed, telling a news conference in the early hours of Sunday that he had discussed the idea with Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed al-Nahayan, UAE's foreign minister.

The SNC has set up two committees to discuss the idea; the first will communicate with the Free Syrian Army, the major rebel military group, while the second will deal with all other opposition groups, said Sida.

Last week, Brigadier General Manaf Tlas, one of the most senior defectors to flee Syria, said he would try to help unite Syria's fragmented opposition inside and outside the country in order to agree a roadmap for a power transfer.

Sida said he welcomed Tlas' defection, but said the general could not be involved in the early stages of organizing a transitional government.

"The dialogue and coordination have to first be with the Free Syrian Army and the various members of the Syrian opposition movements, and after that if there are some roles to be played by members who have defected, then so be it - but with the condition that there is an agreement between the Syrians about that."

Sida also ruled out the possibility of Tlas becoming head of a transitional government. "This has to be a person who can lead a national government and who has been committed to the revolution since the beginning," he said.

Chevron 2Q net income slips 7 percent

NEW YORK (AP) ? A soaring profit at Chevron's refineries eased some of the pain of a weaker second quarter.

The oil giant said Friday net income fell nearly 7 percent to $7.21 billion, or $3.66 per share. But the results beat expectations thanks to a strong performance from its refinery business.

The company's stock price rose 99 cents to close at $109.26 Friday.

Like its peers, the oil giant is struggling to find and replace its sources of petroleum. The world's slowing economy has also pushed down prices for the crude it sells.

But the lower prices had benefits. Profits at Chevron's refining and marketing business rose 80 percent. Its refineries paid less for oil while selling gasoline at higher prices on the U.S. West Coast. Pump prices there remained well above the national average last quarter because of supply problems in the region. The business also sold about $200 million in assets, including its stake in a South Korean energy business.

"They've done a good job of cutting dead weight from their portfolio," Morningstar Inc. analyst Allen Good said. "Their refining business, especially in California, was especially strong."

But the help that lower oil prices gave Chevron's refineries hurt its other business ? finding and selling crude and natural gas.

Earnings from its exploration and production business fell 18 percent to $5.62 billion. Chevron, the second-largest U.S. petroleum company behind Exxon Mobil, sold oil for lower prices in the U.S. and overseas. Natural gas fetched only half as much in the U.S. as it did a year earlier. Production from its global network of oil and natural gas wells declined 2.6 percent.

Profits also fell in the second quarter for Royal Dutch Shell, Occidental Petroleum Corp. and ConocoPhillips. Exxon Mobil profits rose, but that was due to a big one-time gain from the sale of Japanese assets. BP reports its second-quarter financial results next week.

Her symptoms resolved spontaneously. On subsequent questioning, she recalled unintentionally swallowing a pen 25 years earlier. While she was interrogating a spot on her tonsil with the pen she slipped, fell and swallowed the pen by mistake. Her husband and general practitioner dismissed her story and plain abdominal films done at the time were reported as normal.

Honestly, I don't blame the husband or the doctors for being skeptical. "Where's my pen?" the husband asks. "Oh, while using it to examine my tonsil, I slipped and it fell down my throat" seems so...unlikely. However, 25 years later, when the hospital doctors took a second look...

A gastroscopy demonstrated a plastic felt-tip pen sitting in the lumen of the stomach without evidence of any gastric damage... It was subsequently removed in a combined endoscopic and ear, nose and throat procedure under general anaesthetic.

PAU'S HONOR

When Spain walks into Olympic stadium on Friday night for the opening ceremomy, they'll be led by Pau Gasol. The basketball star has been designated the nation's flag bearer, one of the highest honors an Olympic athlete can get.

"It's an amazing honor," Gasol said. "I feel very lucky and privileged to be carrying the flag and leading all of our athletes into the stadium. It will be a very memorable moment in my career."

The Spanish basketball team is considered one of the few teams that could challenge the mighty Americans for the gold medal. Despite a 100-78 exhibition loss to the United States earlier this week, Gasol's hopes remain high.

"Argentina, Russia, France and the USA are obviously the toughest teams," Gasol said. "But that has to proven during the tournament."

AP's Jenna Fryer, out and about in London, reports in:

I want to buy tickets to the gold medal game in men's beach volleyball. Maybe some for athletics, too. But I can't, and it's because I'm an American.

The final available tickets have been released, but you can only get them through the official website if you are a "resident of the UK or a designated European country." Since I don't meet that criteria, I've got to go through an authorized ticket reseller.

Slight problem: CoSport, the ATR for the United States, doesn't have tickets available for anything.

So, you've got a case of someone in London willing to part with an exorbitant amount of cash ? the only tickets left for the final day of track and field are going for 725 pounds (more than $1,000) ? but unable to open my wallet because of my nationality.

Meanwhile, the website SeatGeek has tracked more than 60 ticketing sites and found that the opening ceremony tickets have Super Bowl-like demand, and the average resale price is $2,550. If you are an American wanting to get in to Friday night's event, paying that price through eBay is likely your only option.

Queen Elizabeth II, like so many in Britain, has taken quite a shine to cycling.

Bradley Wiggins became the first Brit to win the Tour de France last weekend, and David Millar also won a stage during La Grande Boucle. Sprint specialist Mark Cavendish, the reigning road world champion, is among the favorites to win Saturday's race that begins and ends just outside of Buckingham Palace.

"I was at a reception at Buckingham Palace the other night and the IOC president was introducing her to certain people," UCI President Pat McQuaid said of the queen.

"He introduces her to me and said, 'Mr. McQuaid is a president of a very important federation and it's cycling," he said. "With that, her eyes lit up. She said, 'Oh, we're very successful in cycling now. We just won the Tour de France!' She was very aware of it."

FLAME LIGHTER?

The Olympics are finally here, and with Friday night's opening ceremony fast approaching, the speculation is mounting over who will earn the honor of lighting the Olympic flame.

Bookmakers have assigned odds on who will be the final torchbearer, so this is something you can actually bet on. The British Olympic Association said last week they've made their selection, so a handful of people already know the identity.

That's only heightened the debate, even between some of the contenders.

Sir Steve Redgrave is a five-time rowing gold medalist, but he's publicly questioned if two-time decathlon gold medalist Daley Thompson should get the nod over him. Thompson, meanwhile, has said he's more deserving than Sebastian Coe, two-time Olympic champion in the 1,500 meters and head of the London organizing committee.

And don't forget the celebrities or the royals.

Among the other names bandied about has been Prince William, David Beckham, Paul McCartney, or, maybe, an electronic device. In 1992, archer Antonio Rebollo opened the Games by shooting a flaming arrow toward the cauldron.

LONG RIDE

Thousands of visitors to London this week have made incredibly long trips to get here. Only one claims to have done it all on a rickshaw.

Farmer Chen Guanming is claiming that he made the entire journey from his home in Eastern China on his three-wheeled rickshaw. He says it took him two years to complete the ride, and he has photos of him in front of famous landmarks like the Eiffel Tower to prove his case.

"I came. I did it. I'm very happy to have come to beautiful London," he said.

He made the trip without a ticket for the opening ceremony. He figures if he made it this far, he should be able to come up with a way to get into Olympic Stadium on Friday night.

FLYING SQUIRREL(S)

Watch your head for Flying Squirrels at the London Olympics. There's more than one of 'em.

U.S. Greco-Roman wrestler Ellis Coleman earned that nickname a few years ago because of his risky, signature move of the same name. Pint-sized gymnast Gabby Douglas earned the exact same moniker for the way she seems to fearlessly fly through the air on the uneven bars.

The two Flying Squirrels had a run-in Thursday ? sort of.

"Oh my God, I think he wanted a picture with us today. He's pretty big, right?," said Douglas, asked whether she had met Coleman. "Yeah, I think so."

Turns out the photo never happened, though. Squirrels are hard to catch.

"We had to catch a bus," Douglas said, "so we didn't have time."

VOLLEYBALL AND HORSE GUARDS

The beach volleyball venue is taking up some prime London real estate: Horse Guards Parade, which is basically in the prime minister's front yard and not far from Buckingham Palace and Parliament, too.

So, what are the Horse Guards doing while their usual home is covered with sand? They're running through their usual routine across the street.

In a lesser-known changing of the guard, a group of blue-coated riders, some of them with shiny armor vests, sit facing another set wearing red. After measuring each other up for a few minutes, one officer barks out commands, they sheath their swords and ride off single file.

A friendly bobby explained that the different colors represent different regiments.

MARCHING IN THE OPENING

Geno Auriemma says one of his fondest Olympic memories remains having the chance to march in the opening ceremony of the Sydney Games.

Far be it from him to deny his U.S. women's basketball team the opportunity.

Some athletes and teams who compete on the first full day of the Olympics traditionally tend to skip the opening ceremony the night before, simply because it's a late night and hours and hours of being on your feet during the entry parade.

But Auriemma's team will march, and he's perfectly fine with that choice.

"They all march. They will," Auriemma said. "No question, it's difficult. But you know, marching in the ceremony is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, maybe. And it's something everyone should get to experience."

ARM sees profit surge 23 percent, tests forecasters' patience

Just when financial boffins expected ARM's consistent double-digit growth to slow-down, the company has beaten their projections with a 23 percent rise in pre-tax profit compared to Q2 of last year. Oh No They Didn't! - Zoe Kazan critiques the Manic Pixie Dream Girl ...

"I think defining a girl and making her lovable because of her music taste or because she wears cute clothes is a really superficial way of looking at women. I did want to address that."
For her screenwriting debut, actress Zoe Kazan wrote what she knew: A story about the writing process.

The 28-year-old comes from a family of writers -- screenwriters Nicholas Kazan ("Reversal of Fortune") and Robin Swicord ("Little Women") are her parents, while her grandmother is the late playwright Molly Kazan; Kazan's grandfather is Elia Kazan, the late and acclaimed director -- and her script for "Ruby Sparks" focuses on Calvin, a famed novelist (played by Paul Dano, Kazan's real-life boyfriend), with a decade-long case of writer's block. Spurred on by a dream, Calvin begins to write about Ruby Sparks (Kazan), an idealized version of a woman who miraculously comes to life -- giving Cal everything he dreamed of in a girl, for better and worse.

If that sounds like a typical quirky indie film, don't tell that to Kazan (seriously, she hates the term "quirky"). Thanks to a strong script that is never predictable and assured direction from Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris ("Little Miss Sunshine"), "Ruby Sparks" is an indie romance that also works as a repudiation of indie romances.

Kazan sat down with HuffPost Entertainment to discuss her inspiration for the film and why you may be right to think of "Ruby Sparks" as a pointed response to the Manic Pixie Dream Girl movement.

What made you want to write this script?
I've always been really interested in the Pygmalion myth. I think it's compelling. I'm reading this book -- "She," by Robert Johnson, who was this psychologist in the '70s and he says this thing about how we use the word myth to mean falsehood, and it should actually mean truth-hood. A myth is a story that has been stripped of any personal identity and been transformed into the universal because it is truthful. That's how I think of the Pygmalion myth, which has so much to say about both creativity -- and the experience of being creative -- and also the way men put women on a pedestal and can romanticize femininity. I just always wanted to write about that, and one morning I woke up and the seeds were in my head. Not unlike Calvin, I had a dream and I wrote it down and started to think about why I am writing this and why it was meaningful to me.

Did you give thought to writing it as a play, considering your background?
I just saw it as a movie. Movies are told in pictures, and when I've written plays -- plays are dialogue. So when I start seeing stage pictures, I know it's a play. The first image I had was the first image of the movie: The girl, backlit, moving toward camera. That's a movie. You couldn't do that as a play.

It sounds like you had very visual ideas in mind when you wrote the script. Did you want to direct?
No, I will never act and direct at the same time. That is asking for trouble. But maybe down the line [I would want to direct]. Jonathan [Dayton] and Valerie [Faris] did a beautiful job and they hired the most amazing director of photography, Matthew Libatique. There were a lot of choices they made that were not [sing-song] quirky indie movie choices. The choice of Matty for the DP; Nick Urata, who did the music, did this really big and lush orchestral score. It's not like an acoustic guitar with a dude singing. They made these operatic choices and it's one of the reasons I really wanted them to direct it. I knew they were capable of making unusual choices like that.

I think that helps to separate from the rash of quirky indie movies.
That's my least favorite word in the world.

Quirky or indie?
Quirky. It means nothing.

OK, well, since you bring it up: A lot of "Ruby Sparks" feels like a response to the quirky Manic Pixie Dream Girls in movies like "(500) Days of Summer" and "Garden State." Was it your intention to rebuff that kind of character?

First of all, that term is a term that was made up by a [film critic]. So, for me, it's much more of a term that has to do with critical understanding than it has to do with creative process. Everybody is setting out to write a full character. It's just that some people are limited in their imagination of a girl. Cal's brother says that in the film: "You've written a girl, not a person." I think defining a girl and making her lovable because of her music taste or because she wears cute clothes is a really superficial way of looking at women. I did want to address that.

I was interested in what happens to a guy who starts to write someone -- and basically has an idea of her -- how does he deal with the reality when she arrives. It's not just "Be careful what you wish for." We all do that in a relationship. When we first meet someone and we find them attractive and they smell good to us, we project a whole lifetime of romantic dreams and ideals on them. As the real person surfaces, you have to amalgamate those two things. You have to either put one away or learn how to let the two live simultaneously. So, I am definitely not interested in adding to the genre of Manic Pixie Dream Girl. I'm very happy to have this movie read as a critique of that, if that's how you want to read it. It's not how I wrote it -- that was not my primary goal. But I really, really think it's dangerous to reduce a person to an idea. I think that's part of what the movie is about.

Critics have used [Manic Pixie Dream Girl] to describe Annie Hall or Katharine Hepburn's character in "Bringing Up Baby." To me, they're not manic, they're not pixie, they're not dream girls. They're people being played by really intelligent actresses bringing their full selves to the part. So, I just don't like the label. It's a way of making [characters] less individual. Not to say there isn't anyone writing characters like that. I understand why the criticism is there. I, too, have been annoyed by some of those things.

How do you want people to read Gertrude (Annette Bening), Calvin's mother? Because she seems like a real-world equivalent of Ruby.
I thought of her more as somebody who had been very buttoned-up in her first relationship and sort of controlled. She said Calvin's father was like Calvin. Someone who wants certain things and has a very narrow viewpoint of the world. And when he passed away, she had this efflorescence of letting the other parts of her personality out. I don't think people are just one way. We have different ways of expressing ourselves. I did want their to be parallels between Ruby and Gertrude and that Gertrude sees herself at a younger age. She worries about whether Calvin is being controlling in the relationship. I also wanted Calvin feeling threatened by Gertrude liking Ruby and Ruby feeling less his and more a part of the group in those scenes.

Calvin does some pretty unforgivable things in the third act. Were you concerned that pushing them too far would make the audience lose their connection to him?
Here's the thing. I think if you're going to make a movie in which a man can control a woman, if you don't push it to the extreme, it's going to be sexist. I think a movie like "Bruce Almighty," when he's tweaking her boobs -- when you give someone a god-like power, you can't dip one toe and be like, "Oh, the movie's moral, because he realizes it's bad." I think you have to go there, especially in order to implicate the audience. I feel like the audience enjoys watching Cal change her -- they enjoy him making Ruby speak French -- but I feel we have to go to the dark place to exorcise it.
