Give barefoot running the boot?

May 30, 2013 ? Barefoot running has been making headlines ever since 1960, when a shoeless Abebe Bikila set a new world-record marathon time at the Rome Olympics. Even manufacturers have muscled in on the trend over the years, with most now offering their own version of 'barefoot' or 'minimalist' shoes.

Supporters of barefoot running make a variety of claims about its virtues -- but what does the scientific evidence actually say?

Benno Nigg and Henrik Enders from the Human Performance Laboratory at the University of Calgary investigated. Their paper, published in the journal Footwear Science, examines the known research into barefoot running's effects on foot motion, training, running economy and injury.

They started with the barefoot boosters' claims that running without shoes encourages a 'forefoot' rather than a 'heel' landing, making runners less prone to injury. Nigg and Enders dispute this, saying that not only does the available research not prove any reduced injury risk, other factors like the running surface, shoe choice, speed and individual preferences play too large a role to make such generalisations possible. Likewise, the researchers found no difference between shod and barefoot movements in their ability to strengthen certain muscles.

The additional weight of a shoe (up to about 300g) didn't seem to have much effect on performance, either. What seemed to make more of a difference was what Nigg and Enders call the 'preferred movement pattern': the combination of chosen footwear and a runner's preferred strike pattern.

Nigg and Enders also debunk the main claim of barefoot supporters: that running without shoes leads to fewer injuries. They point to problems with the research on which the original claims were based and note that while existing articles address the different injuries caused by different landing styles, they know of 'no publication that provides hard evidence that people running barefoot have fewer injuries than people running in running shoes'. They conclude, quite simply, that 'it is not known whether people running barefoot have more, equal, or fewer injuries than people running in conventional running shoes.'

The current discussion on the benefits of barefoot versus shod running tends to be focused on 'which is better'. Nigg and Enders' work suggests that perhaps this isn't the right question to ask. What's more important, at least in terms of performance and injury, appears to be individual preference and running style. 'Subjective preferences' should play a bigger role in the discussion, whatever shoe manufacturers, coaches or other athletes might say: in the end, runners run best when they're comfortable -- whatever they're wearing (or not) on their feet. This paper is an important contribution to a debate that for now, seems certain to run and run.

Adobe releases Kuler iPhone app for snapshot color picking, redesigns huecentric web interface

Although the shiny new iOS app and retooled web interface were demoed a few weeks back at MAX 2013, Adobe has released both facets of its new and improved Kuler color selection tool into the wild. The iPhone software enables hue selection with the handset's camera or selecting a previously captured image for inspiration -- with built-in preset moods and color rules to expedite the process when needed. Created themes can then be saved and accessed via both the web interface and inside Creative Cloud applications like Photoshop and Illustrator. The free app is available now in iTunes and a quick walkthrough resides beyond the break.

Billy Joel surprises New York high school

NEW YORK (AP) ? Billy Joel was back in high school.

The singer surprised an assembly full of students at the Frank Sinatra School of the Arts in the borough of Queens on Thursday, appearing with Tony Bennett, who opened the school in 2001 through his Exploring the Arts program.

Joel performed songs on two different pianos onstage ? he sang "New York State of Mind" on one and "She's Got a Way" on the other. In between his performances, he answered questions from students.

The first: "What do you think is one of your biggest mistakes?"

"My biggest mistake was signing a lot of contracts that I didn't know what they were about," said Joel, who released his first album in 1971. "I signed away a lot of my rights ? record royalties, publishing rights, copyrights and it took me years to get that stuff back."

One male student asked for a hug as the audience cheered on, another had the 64-year-old sign his yearbook and a young girl got an autograph for her mother.

The crowd of 400 students brought a playful side out of Joel, who was lively with the students.

When asked who his favorite collaborator was, the Grammy winner answered: "Probably Elle Macpherson. That was a good collaboration," he said of the Australian model he dated in the 1980s.

One girl asked Joel if he would play "Uptown Girl."

"It's my favorite song," she gushed.

"It sounds like crap without harmonies and drums," Joel replied.

"I can be your harmony," she added to laughs.

Joel did not graduate with his high school class and instead was given a diploma 25 years later. He has made a number of visits to colleges in recent years ? including a recent trip to Vanderbilt that went viral.

He said in an interview that his favorite moment in school was cutting class to go play the piano in the auditorium. He also said he was greatly affected by one of his teachers.

"I had a good chorus teacher and he encouraged me to become a musician. That's my greatest memory of school ? an adult said, 'You should consider becoming a professional musician,'" he recalled. "I'd never heard (that) before in my life and that kind of changed my life."

Bennett's Exploring the Arts program supports 14 schools in New York and will launch three schools in Los Angeles this year. He and his wife, former teacher Susan Crow, kept Joel's appearance a secret since March.

"I had teachers texting me last night, 'Susan, who's coming?' My lips are sealed," Crow said.

Joel's interaction with the students was a memorable moment for Bennett, a Queens native.

"It's something that will stay with them forever and ever," he said.

Joel, who was born in the Bronx, said he was teased when he would get piano lessons since that teacher also taught ballet.

"I would walk by the guys on my block (and they'd say), 'Where's your tutu?' They'd knock the books out of my hand," Joel recalled, which earned a stream of "awws" from the students.

"But then I took up boxing," he said.

And It Hurts? Here?Because? Ergonomic Recommendations ...

Thumb Pain- May indicate a trigger thumb or DeQuervain?s Tenosynovitis.? Often occurs from either squeezing the mouse too hard or from tensing the thumb (as if hitch-hiking) over the keyboard keys.? Keep the thumbs relaxed using only the minimal amount of force needed to control the mouse.? When typing, keep the thumbs relaxed and just hovering over the keyboard.? Don?t pound the space bar.? Also, when writing, use a larger-barreled pen and don?t squeeze the pen too tightly.? Keep the thumb tip relaxed and only slightly bent ? it is common for people write with their thumb tips bent at an extreme angle.

Wrist Pain?or?Pain at the Base of the Hand/Thumb? May indicate a tendinitis where the wrist muscles attach (flexor or extensor tendinitis), DeQuervain?s Tenosynovitis, or Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.? These are often caused by swiveling the mouse in or by poor wrist positioning.? Keep the wrist neutral (flat ? not bent forward or back or angled side-to-side; the middle finger should be in a parallel line with the forearm).? Initiate small movements to control the mouse from the elbow and shoulder.?? Don?t squeeze the mouse too tightly ? use only the minimal amount of force necessary to control it.? Check your keyboard size and fit.? Pain over the small finger side of the wrist is often caused by the outward angulation of the wrist required to rest your hand on the home keys.? Using an ergonomic split keyboard is a quick-and-easy way to provide neutral wrist positioning.

Elbow Pain?? May indicate an inflammation where the forearm muscles attach into the upper arm bone at the elbow ? Medial or Lateral Epicondylitis.? Can also be caused by several nerve compression syndromes that occur near the elbow ? Cubital Tunnel Syndrome, Radial Tunnel Syndrome.? Check out the positioning of the keyboard height and mouse location.? When working at a computer, your ear, shoulder and elbow should be stacked in a vertical alignment.? If your elbow is not relaxed at your side, you may need to change positioning by lowering the keyboard surface or getting in closer to your desk.? The elbow should not be bent at more than a 90 degree angle while using the computer.? A mouse that positions the arm in a more neutral ?hand-shake? position may also be helpful.? Don?t swivel the mouse from the wrist.? Also, keep the hand relaxed on the mouse and use only the smallest amount of force necessary to activate the mouse click.? Don?t hold the index finger stiffly over the mouse (as if pointing) and don?t pound the mouse buttons, especially with a straight finger.? Rather, keep the index finger slightly bent and lightly touching the mouse.

Shoulder Pain?? Often caused by reaching forward for long periods of time for the keyboard or mouse.? When working at a computer, your ear, shoulder and elbow should be stacked in a vertical alignment.? If your elbow is not relaxed at your side, you may be reaching forward causing strain on the arm muscles.? It takes work to hold the arm in this position for long periods of time even if the work itself is not too forceful.? To keep the upper arm muscles more relaxed, you may need to lower the keyboard surface or get in closer to your desk.? Check your chair.? Are you sitting back in the char?? Does it provide proper lumbar support and seat depth?? Look at the arm rest height.? You may need to lower the arm rests in order to keep the shoulders relaxed.

Neck Pain, Eye-Strain & Headaches?? Often caused by poor positioning of the monitor.? Position the monitor directly in front of the keyboard so you are not twisting the body while using the computer.? Check out the height and distance of the monitor.? It may need to be adjusted so that you can clearly see the monitor print without tipping the head forward or back.? Avoid using bifocals while on the computer.? If you work extensively from copy, keep the copy in front of the monitor or directly to each side.? Use a tray that holds the copy close to monitor height to avoid repetitively looking up-and-down from the copy to the monitor.? Use a phone headset to avoid cradling the phone between the shoulder and the ear if you need to type and talk at the same time.

YouTube adds slow-mo feature to its editing tools

YouTube autoslomo

YouTube introduces builtin slowmo feature

How do you add a dramatic flair to your mundane video clips? You play it in slow motion, that's how. And now that YouTube has introduced a built-in slow-mo feature, you don't even need to capture footage using a high-speed camera. Just click Edit, navigate to Enhancements and hit the icon emblazoned with a turtle to make footage crawl at 12.5, 25 or 50 percent of its original pace. Note that resulting clips can last no longer than 10 minutes, and the feature might not be available in some countries outside the US just yet. Head past the break to compare two samples and see how the new feature can transform your YouTube vids, Dave Chappelle-style.

Tim Cook: 13 million Apple TVs sold, half in the last year; 'grand vision' for TV

Tim Cook 13 million Apple TVs sold, half in the last year 'grand vision' for TV

Speaking at AllThingsD's D11 conference, Apple CEO Tim Cook just dropped the latest sales figure for the Apple TV: 13 million (compare that to Roku's sales of 5 million in the US), with "about half" sold in the last year. Despite being prodded by interviewers Walt Mossberg and Kara Swisher, Cook repeated his "area of great interest" line (again) regarding TV, only mentioning that the company does have a "grand vision" in place. Surprised by the hockey puck's popularity? You're not the only one, as Cook followed up on Steve Jobs' proclamation that" no one wants to buy a box," claiming "Frankly, the popularity of the Apple TV has become much larger than we thought it would. We aren't marketing it."

Last year at the conference he reported sales of 2.7 million Apple TVs for the year, and the company noted 2 million sold in Q1 2013. He also followed his predecessor's stance that the current TV experience needs remodeling "When you look at the TV experience, it's not an experience that I think many people love...still an experience that is too much like 10 or 20 years ago." As usual however, despite the "interest," if you're looking for a hint that Apple is going to join the likes of Google and Microsoft in trying to shift the balance of the TV market, Cook -- like Jobs before him -- is keeping those details to himself.

(AP) ? John Tortorella was defiant in stating that the New York Rangers didn't take a step back when they were knocked out of the Stanley Cup playoffs in the second round.

General manager Glen Sather thought otherwise and fired the combative coach on Wednesday.

The fiery Tortorella was let go four days after the Rangers' season ended with a Game 5 loss at Boston to the Bruins. New York had reached the Eastern Conference finals last year and was considered to be a championship contender in this lockout-shortened season.

"I came up with the decision that I really needed to do something to improve our team going forward," Sather said during a conference call. "Every coach has a shelf life. I've told every guy that I've hired that at some point in time this is going to change.

"Our goal is to win the Stanley Cup and we didn't achieve that goal this year. I had to make a decision, so I did."

Tortorella was unexpectedly dismissed with one year left on his contract. In 319 regular-season games with New York, including a four-game run at the end of the 1999-2000 season, Tortorella went 171-118-1-29. He was 19-25 in the postseason, and reached the playoffs in four of five seasons after taking over as coach in February 2009.

"Every time a coach gets fired, it is a surprise for me, because ultimately, we, the players, are responsible for our own play on the ice," Rangers backup goaltender Martin Biron told the Associated Press in a text message.

Tortorella, hired to replace Tom Renney with 21 games remaining in the 2008-09 season, achieved some success with the Rangers but couldn't match the Stanley Cup title he earned in 2004 with the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Sather said Tortorella's contract status didn't factor into the decision.

"It wasn't one thing and I am certainly not going to speculate or start to criticize what happened with Torts and give you a lot of reasons why we decided to do this," Sather said. "After the analytical work that we do every year at the end of the season, trying to decide how we're going to improve the team and how we're going to move forward, this is a decision I made."

Sather didn't name an immediate replacement, but hopes to have a new coach in place by the June 30 NHL draft in Newark, N.J.

Former NHL coaches Lindy Ruff and Alain Vigneault could be candidates for New York. Sather wouldn't speculate whether anyone currently employed by the Rangers would be considered. The fate of assistant coach Mike Sullivan will be decided during the team's organizational meetings in June.

"Hopefully whoever we hire has a lot of the good things that Torts had and a lot of good things that Tom Renney had," Sather said. "There are a number of good coaches around, and a lot of them have different qualities. It is a little tricky sometimes to find someone who has all those qualities, but hopefully that's what we're going to have this time around.

"I am certain that we're going to find the right person."

Last season, Tortorella led the Rangers to 51 wins ? the second-most in franchise history ? and 109 points before they were beaten in six games by New Jersey in the conference finals. He finished his Rangers tenure in fourth place on the team's career coaching wins list.

The 54-year-old Tortorella got the Rangers back into the playoffs in this lockout-shortened season, and New York outlasted Washington in seven games in the first round of the playoffs before being knocked out by Boston.

"I felt this was a decision that had to be made going forward," Sather said. "I think he was shocked, but he is a gentleman and he took it very well."

Tortorella made curious comments on Monday when the Rangers packed up for the season, which could have led to his ouster. In his final meeting with reporters, Tortorella said his club wasn't emotionally ready to take on Boston after getting past Washington with back-to-back shutout wins when it faced elimination.

"One of the things, and it falls on my shoulders, is our team's mindset going into another round," Tortorella said. "I don't think our mindset was ready to play another series and to the level you need to be at. It didn't have a playoff atmosphere.

"That's what I struggle with right now. I didn't do a good enough job in correcting and getting their mindset back to not only play at the level of a Game 7 in the first round but get ready for round 2, which is always going to be tougher."

Even though the Rangers were knocked out earlier this year, Tortorella emphatically stated he didn't believe the team regressed.

"I know the surrounding feeling here is that it was a negative season, a disappointing season. I don't buy it and I won't," Tortorella said. "There are some good things that happened. I don't think we took a step backward. I think this is a sideways step in our lineup and how things worked out.

"We played really well our last couple of months to get in, found a way to win a big series against Washington, and against Boston I thought we competed right to the end."

However, starting goalie Henrik Lundqvist disagreed with that assessment. Lundqvist is entering the final year of his contract and would be eligible to become an unrestricted free agent next summer.

"It is a step back," Lundqvist said. "We were in the conference finals last year, we had high expectations on ourselves this year. It didn't go our way, so yeah it is a step back. It's tough to make it there, though. You can't just expect it to happen."

Sather said he hadn't talked to Lundqvist, but added the team's plan is to sign him to a new long-term deal.

The Rangers entered the 48-game season as a prime contender to win the Stanley Cup, especially after the offseason acquisition of top forward Rick Nash in a trade with the Columbus Blue Jackets.

After a slow start, the Rangers rallied to a 26-18-4 record and the No. 6 seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs.

But New York struggled to score in the postseason, and Nash and Brad Richards were among the biggest offenders. Nash recorded only one goal and five assists in the Rangers' 12 playoff games.

Richards, who has seven years remaining on a nine-year deal, was a bigger disappointment and was a healthy scratch by Tortorella in the final two games against the Bruins. Sather said that move was an organizational decision.

Richards had thrived under Tortorella when they won the Stanley Cup with Tampa Bay, but he managed only one goal and zero assists in his 10 postseason games. Richards will likely also be gone from the Rangers, who can buy out the remainder of his lucrative deal and remove him from the salary cap that will go down for next season.

Tortorella is the career leader in wins by a U.S.-born coach with 410. He was an assistant coach with the Rangers in the 1999-2000 season and took over for John Muckler as head coach for the final four games.

Tortorella was then hired by the Lightning and he was their coach for seven seasons ? compiling a mark of 239-222-36-38 and earning the Jack Adams Award as NHL coach of the year in the championship 2003-04 season.

Ryan Chalmers Pushing His Chair Across America - Michael Hiles

This morning, I sat waiting at the end of my drive while a small line of traffic passed. Some lead and chase vehicles for a couple of guys in racing wheelchairs.

WAIT!!

WTF?!?!?!?

I mean, I?m pretty comfortable with the random strangeness one experiences when living out in the sticks. But I?ve generally never seen any guys racing down my state route in competition wheelchairs.

I snapped a pic of the guys and their chase vehicle as the line of vehicles behind them went around one by one. When I hit town and parked, I posted the pic on Facebook with a little blurb about not knowing anything about their group Push Across America, but I thought it was cool enough these guys were actually wheeling across the US.

push-across-america-1

After finishing my errands and heading towards my office, I saw the team had made their way into town and was taking a pause at a parking area. I thought to myself, ?Self, turn around and go talk to those guys.?

I do that kind of existential thing from time to time. Call me strange or whatever, but I do meet some really cool people that way.

The chase van driver was Roger Muller, the founder of Stay-Focused. Roger Muller worked in both academia and the business world before committing to his passion of creating an organization that would provide teens with a unique learning experience.

On a diving trip to Grand Cayman in 2000, Roger dived with his brother Bobby, a Marine Corps combat veteran and a paraplegic as a result of an injury sustained in Vietnam. Seeing how much Bobby enjoyed the freedom of diving, Roger decided Stay-Focused would be dedicated to offering teens with disabilities the same opportunity to enjoy the water that his brother had experienced. Stay-Focused was incorporated in January, 2003.

push-across-america-2

The two guys in chairs were roommates, Ryan and Aaron. They?re both competitive Paralympians and literally wheeling their chairs across the nation. They?re sponsored by Dart (you know, party red Solo cups for the keg), Marriott, the Cayman Islands tourism (uhhh, ok now I REALLY want to get to know these guys!!), PADI (the SCUBA diving folks), GoPro (WOAH COOLNESS FACTOR WENT WAY UP!!), GermX and the McIntyre Group.

Ryan Chalmers graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2011, majoring in Recreation, Sport, and Tourism. He learned to SCUBA dive with Stay-Focused in 2005, and was selected to be the first Stay-Focused mentor in 2007. Ryan competed in wheelchair track in the World Championships in 2011, and was a member of Team USA in the Paralympic Games in London in 2012. He recently became a PADI certified Divemaster in October of 2012. This spring he will Push Across America to raise awareness for the potential of all persons with disabilities, to highlight the importance of leadership programs for disabled teens, and to give back to the organization that helped change his life.

Ryan will be pushing the equivalent of two to three marathons a day for 71 days.

WAIT!!!!

WTF?!?!?!?

This guy is a total MONSTER! He reminds me so much of my friend Rudy.

rudyMy friend and mentor, Rudy Szlavi, taught me many years ago the value of focus and drive. Rudy was an inspiration to me because he too lived his entire adult life in a chair. A victim of an auto accident his freshman year in college left him without the use of his legs. I spent a lot of time with Rudy, and I got to understand the mindset of someone with a physical limitation.

There?s a business rule in this? one I?ve held dear, as it keeps me through the troughs and levels my head during the peaks. That gruff Hungarian used to say to me in his hardcore New England accent?

?You think you got it rough kid? At least you got your fuckin? legs, so I don?t want to hear it? CANDY ASS!!?

That burned into my mind as I watched Rudy deal with everyday things we all take for granted. He didn?t get down. He was a machine. He worked every day? and when he?d get sick or weak, he?d push himself to the brink of collapse because he was afraid to not get back up.

Sadly, Rudy succumbed to cancer in 2004. I miss that foul-mouthed, love-able Yoda of mine.

I really wish Ryan, Aaron, Roger and the Push Across America / Stay Focused team well in their efforts to accomplish an amazing feat of physical and mental stamina.

We?re all candy asses compared to these guys!

93% The Sapphires

All Critics (124) | Top Critics (28) | Fresh (115) | Rotten (9)

The harmonies they strike in this reality-inspired charmer are sweetly sublime.

You could drive an Abrams tank through the film's plot holes, but you'll likely be too busy enjoying yourself to bother.

"The Sapphires" feels like a movie you've already seen, but it's nonetheless thoroughly enjoyable, like a pop song that's no less infectious when you know every word.

"The Sapphires" sparkles with sass and Motown soul.

Sapphires is hardly a cinematic diamond mine. But this Commitments-style mashup of music and melodrama manages to entertain without demanding too much of its audience.

The mood is so charming and the music so inspiring that you continually cut it a break.

By-the-numbers in every sense of the word, the film tracks a tried-and-true sort of triumph while featuring renditions of soul classics so bursting with energy and joy you won't care that the originality meter is leaning on empty.

Even when it seems contrived The Sapphires is a feel-good movie in the most positive meaning of that term, thanks to the Motown music and O'Dowd's cheeky charm. Like the Four Tops, I loved every sugar pie, honey bunch moment. I can't help myself.

Unfortunately, it has been turned into a routine and uninspiring movie, following a tired, old formula the entire way.

A surefire crowdpleaser with all the ingredients for the type of little-movie-that-could sleeper success that Harvey Weinstein has nurtured in years and award seasons past.

You've seen this story before, but never pulled off with so much joie de vivre.

They can put a song across just like the Dreamgirls. What's not to like?

Exuberant but fairly formulaic.

Doesn't always mix its anti-prejudice message and its feel-good nostalgia with complete smoothness. But despite some ragged edges it provides a reasonably good time.

Director Wayne Blair -- another veteran of the stage show -- finds his footing during the film's many musical numbers.

Despite the prosaic plot and reserved approach taken by Blair, Briggs, and Thompson, it's tough to get cynical about such a warmhearted picture that strives to tell so uplifting a story.

A movie with enough melody and camaraderie to cover up its lack of originality.

Jackie K. Cooper: "Longmire" Returns For Season Two

Get Entertainment Alerts:

Last year we got our first taste of the new TV series "Longmire" which airs on A&E. This series about the contemporary west soon found its audience and became one of A&E's most successful series ever. Now it is back for its second season and the excitement of the story should continue at a high degree of entertainment excellence.

The show is based on the LONGMIRE series of books from Craig Johnson. The setting is Absaroka County, Wyoming which is where Sheriff Walt Longmire (Robert Taylor) makes his home. The cast of characters of these stories include Walt's deputy Vic Moretti (Katee Sack off), another deputy Branch Connally (Bailey Chase), his friend Henry Standing Bear (Lou Diamond Phillips), and his daughter Cady (Cassidy Freeman).

In the opening episode Walt is transporting a convicted serial killer to meet up with a federal agent. Things go wrong and Longmire ends up taking off in the ferocious winter weather to try to recapture the man. Both the weather and the man are savage so Walt needs all his physical and mental strength in order to survive.

Taylor give Longmire just the right balance of world weariness and energy. This is a man who is seasoned by time and longevity on the job. He relies on his instincts and on the intelligence he possesses. Taylor has the well worn look that is necessary for the role and he climbs into the character and it is a snug fit.

Sackoff's Vic is the hothead of the office but she is an able assistant for Longmire. She is as tough as can be but also vulnerable in certain ways. Sackoff and Taylor create a solid duo for the series and make audiences want to learn more and more about these characters.

There haven't been a lot of good westerns on TV lately and so "Longmire" is a welcome addition to anyone's viewing schedule. It is raw and gritty with engrossing storylines and identifiable characters. You will want to schedule this series into your weekly viewing habits.

So mark down "Longmire" as a must see show each week. It is a little different from other TV series in its presentation and its characters. Robert Taylor makes his mark as a more mature lawman who is still up to doing the job. It might exhaust him a little bit more but his persistence makes the difference.

"Longmire" airs Monday nights at 10 on A&E.

UFC 160?s Three Stars: T.J. Grant, Junior dos Santos, Glover Teixeira and some boxer

UFC 160 was one of the year's best cards. Who stood out among even these great fights?

No. 1 star -- T.J. Grant: All he needed to do to earn a title shot was perform impressively at UFC 160. However, this is no small feat when you consider he was up against Gray Maynard. Grant came through by wrecking Maynard in the first round and earning a $50,000 Knockout of the Night bonus.

No. 2 star -- Junior dos Santos: He threw everything his hands could offer at Mark Hunt, but Hunt somehow withstood them. JDS was winning, but he wasn't content to just take the decision. Instead, he involved his legs and gave us a third-round knockout kick of Hunt to remember. He also pocketed an extra $50,000 as he and Hunt won Fight of the Night honors.

No. 3 star -- Glover Teixeira: He extended his winning streak to 19 by running through James Te Huna like a tractor-trailer. Teixeira owned every second of the short fight, right up until he submitted him with a guillotine halfway through the first round. Like the other stars, he also walked away with $50,000 extra, earning a bonus for Submission of the Night.

Honorable mention -- Mike Tyson: The boxing legend played a big part at UFC 160. He cheered on a weigh-in scuffle, congratulated Teixeira in the cage after his big win, plus helped UFC president Dana White decide to give the Knockout of the Night bonus to T.J. Grant.

Who stood out for you? Speak up on Facebook or Twitter.

Verizon intros Droid RAZR HD and RAZR M in blue

Motorola is no stranger to launching phones in bolder hues, and it's not letting up just because Google is at the helm. Case in point: Verizon has started carrying blue versions of the Droid RAZR M and Droid RAZR HD at the same prices (free and $100) as their subdued black and white counterparts. Our known affinity for the color is a bit tempered here, however. Like the pink Droid RAZR M that surfaced a few months back, the color only goes around the edges -- both RAZRs are otherwise as black as can be. Still, that little splash of blue may be enough to stand out in a frequently drab world.

Rev. Canon C. K. Robertson, Ph.D.: Giving Thanks For All Who Have Worn 'The Uniform'

I never saw my father in uniform. For me, growing up in the suburbs outside Washington, D.C., Dad was a civilian, a government employee who worked for NASA. Each morning he would put on a suit and tie, have some breakfast, and leave for the office. Each night he would come through the door, take off his jacket, loosen his tie, and join us for dinner. He did this for 20 years.

And yet for more than two decades before I was born, Dad put on a uniform and left the house, not for a few hours, but sometimes for a few years. During the Great Depression, he and his brothers helped his father earn a living by building stone walls throughout the city. On the side, he played shortstop for a local, semi-pro baseball team. But then Uncle Sam came calling and, like so many others across the country, Dad responded to the call and served his country, first in World War II, later in Korea and in the Cold War.

My brothers and sisters all knew him as a United States Army officer, but by the time I came along, the uniform had been put away for good. All I had were old photos and the stories that came with them. Some tales he was delighted to relate, and did so on more than one occasion. I heard about that great day when he and the other liberators marched into Paris. And that even greater day in Paris some time later, when he was enjoying some long-awaited R&R with two buddies at a caf? in front of the Grand Hotel, only to hear an announcement come over the loud speakers that Hitler's forces had surrendered and the European part of the war was over. Within minutes of the broadcast, he said, you could walk across the Champs Elysees on heads and shoulders, so great was the number of revelers on the street.

There were other stories he was less inclined to share, as when he saw his good friend, his best man, shot before his eyes. Or when he entered a concentration camp at the end of the war and saw firsthand the horrors of the Holocaust. Looking into the eyes of those emaciated persons before him, he saw no hope, nothing. They were, he said, the walking dead. And then there were the stories he never shared, not with anyone. But my mother saw the results, as she would awake again and again to him screaming in his sleep, reliving nightmarish memories.

Yet through it all, my father never lost his bright smile or good humor, his faith in God or his love for his family. Like so many others who put on the uniform, he was just an ordinary person who had to face extraordinary challenges -- and rose to the occasion. Dad died three years ago at the age of 95, one more member of that "greatest generation" no longer with us. Shortly before he left, I presented him with a photograph of a brick with his name and rank on it, a brick laid down at the entrance of the National World War II Museum in New Orleans. In light of all he had done, mine was a paltry gift, but it still felt good to do it.

Now, as I approach another Memorial Day, I cannot help but think of that soldier I never saw in uniform. The closest I came was on Saturday mornings when we would venture into the city, to the commissary at Fort McNair, for our weekly grocery run. Each time, the guard at the front gate of the base would take note of the colonel's decal on our car, and suddenly stand at attention and salute my father. And I would see my father's shoulders straighten, and his arm stiffen, as he returned the salute. And if I looked carefully enough, I could see the uniform that he never truly took off.

This Memorial Day, I give thanks to God for my father, and all those in this country who have worn a uniform and worn it well. "O God, we remember before you with grateful hearts the men and women of our country who in the day of decision ventured much for the liberties we now enjoy. Amen."

The Rev. Dr. C. K. Robertson is Canon to Episcopal Church Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori.

Preterm birth affects ability to solve complex cognitive tasks: Too early to learn

May 27, 2013 ? Being born preterm goes hand in hand with an increased risk for neuro-cognitive deficits. Psychologists from the Ruhr-Universit?t Bochum and the University of Warwick, UK have investigated the relation between the duration of pregnancy and cognitive abilities under varying work load conditions.

"Cognitive performance deficits of children dramatically increase as cognitive workload of tasks increases and pregnancy duration decreases," says Dr Julia J?kel from the Ruhr-Universit?t. In the journal PLOS ONE, the researchers report a new cognitive workload model describing the association between task complexity and incremental performance deficits of preterm children.

Large numbers of preterm born babies will place new demands on education system

About 15 million, i.e., more than ten per cent of all babies worldwide are born preterm every year; that is before the 37th week of pregnancy -- and the numbers are rising due to improvements in neonatal medicine and demographic changes. Recent studies suggest that delivery at any gestation other than full term (39 to 41 weeks gestational age) may impair brain development, rendering survivors at risk for adverse neuro-cognitive outcomes. Considering that 50 per cent of children are born before the 39th week of pregnancy, even small increases in cognitive impairments may have large effects on a population level. "As the total number of children born preterm increases there will be parallel increases in special education needs placing new demands on the education system," Julia J?kel and her colleagues say. To date, uncertainties remain regarding the nature and underlying causes of learning difficulties in preterm children. The new cognitive workload model now reconciles previous inconsistent findings on the relationship of gestational age and cognitive performance.

Cognitive deficits of children born preterm depend on the workload of the task

The research team tested 1326 children, born between weeks 23 and 41 of pregnancy, at an age of eight years. Data were collected as part of the prospective Bavarian Longitudinal Study. The children took part in a range of cognitive tests with varying workload. High workload tasks require the simultaneous integration of different sources of information, thereby placing high demands on the so called working memory. The results: The higher the workload and the shorter the pregnancy duration, the larger were the cognitive performance deficits. Deficits were disproportionally higher for children born before the 34th week of pregnancy compared with children born after week 33. Being born preterm specifically affected the ability to solve high workload tasks, whereas lower workload tasks were largely unaffected.

Results are relevant for cognitive follow-ups and planning of school lessons

According to the researchers, these results should be taken into account for routine cognitive follow-ups of preterm children as well as for planning school lessons. "New studies suggest that computerized training can improve working memory capacity," Prof Dieter Wolke from Warwick says. "In addition, educational interventions could be developed in which information is not presented simultaneously to preterm children but more slowly and sequentially to promote academic attainment."

Receiving A Gold Plated iPad At Hotel Check-In Is Normal, Right?

Receiving A Gold Plated iPad At Hotel Check-In Is Normal, Right?

You know the drill. You pull up to a Super 8 Motel with the vacancy light on, you argue with the attendent about getting a room away from the ice machine, you whip out your AAA card for extra savings and then you take the 24-karat gold-plated iPad the attendant hands you and head off to your room to stockpile some free soap. Boom.

At the (slightly fancy) Burj Al Arab hotel in Dubai the gold-plated iPads are flowing freely. Each guest receives one at check-in so they can use custom "Interactive Customer Experience software" to enhance their stay at the hotel. Let's recall that Burj Al Arab is the hotel notable for looking like a sail in the wind, having the world's highest tennis court (which obviously doubles as a helipad) and being located on a man-made private island less than 1,000 feet from Jumeirah beach.

The gold iPads are engraved with the Burj Al Arab logo and act as a "virtual concierge," providing information on hotel services, restaurants and events. The iPads will be available for sale in the Burj Al Arab "boutique" along with gold iPad minis, gold iPhone 5s and gold BlackBerry Q10s. Okay hospitality industry, keep up. [Born Rich]

Sixth night of violence in Sweden, but police say capital calmer

STOCKHOLM (Reuters) - Community patrols and a beefed-up police presence helped to calm violence around Stockholm overnight on Saturday but 20 to 30 cars were still torched in poor immigrant suburbs and serious incidents were reported outside the capital for the first time. The rioting in Stockholm abated after a week of masked youths vandalizing schools and police stations, setting cars alight and hurling stones at firefighters, police said.

In Syria's shadow, Iraq violence presents new test for U.S.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Saddled with Middle East problems ranging from Iran to Syria and beyond, President Barack Obama now faces one that is both old and new: Iraq. Unresolved sectarian tensions, inflamed by the raging civil war in neighboring Syria, have combined to send violence in Iraq to its highest level since Obama withdrew the last U.S. troops in December 2011, U.S. officials and Middle East analysts say.

PARIS (Reuters) - French magistrates decided on Friday not to place IMF chief Christine Lagarde under formal investigation over her role in a 285-million-euro ($368.5 million) arbitration payment made to a supporter of former president Nicolas Sarkozy. Lagarde instead was given the status of a "supervised witness" after two full days of questioning on her 2008 decision as Sarkozy's finance minister to use arbitration to settle a legal battle between the state and businessman Bernard Tapie.

Guatemalan ex-president extradited to U.S. on money-laundering charges

GUATEMALA CITY (Reuters) - Former Guatemalan President Alfonso Portillo was extradited on Friday to the United States to face money-laundering charges, just days after former dictator Efrain Rios Montt's genocide conviction was overturned. A U.S. grand jury decided in 2009 that Portillo, who was in office from 2000 to 2004, should face charges that he laundered $70 million through U.S. banks.

British security services in spotlight after soldier murder

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's security services faced questions on Friday over whether they could have done more to prevent the murder of a soldier hacked to death in a busy London street after it emerged that his suspected killers were known to intelligence officers. Divers, rescue workers search for pilot of crashed NY Angel Flight

By The Associated Press

APEPHRATAH, N.Y. -?Divers equipped with sonar and rescue workers canvassing the woods will resume their search Sunday for the ? of a volunteer Angel Flight that crashed in upstate New York, killing two people, a town official said.?

The search for the third person aboard the twin-engine plane that crashed Friday evening in Ephratah, about an hour west of Albany, ended unsuccessfully on Saturday. Crews will resume the search Sunday, Town of Ephratah County Board Supervisor Todd Bradt said.?

Bradt said a piece of the plane was removed from a large pond where much of it was submerged. He said divers are having trouble seeing in the water because "it's so muddy and murky."?

Wreckage from the crash was dispersed over a large area, with pieces of the plane found as far as five miles away, according to National Transportation Safety Board spokesman Eric Weiss. He said one of the plane's two engines was recovered outside the pond, but most of the plane is still submerged.?

Fulton County Sheriff Thomas Lorey has said the flight's two passengers were found dead Friday near where the twin-engine plane crashed in a wooded area in Ephratah. He did not return messages seeking comment Saturday.?

'Tremendously saddened'
Angel Flight is a nonprofit group that arranges free air transportation for sick patients from volunteer pilots. Larry Camerlin, president and founder of Angel Flight Northeast, said the organization was "tremendously saddened" by news of the crash.?

The twin-engine Piper PA 34 had departed from Hanscom Field in Bedford, Mass., and was headed to Rome, N.Y., before it crashed just after 5 p.m. Friday, Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen said. The NTSB said Saturday the plane did not issue a distress call before losing radar and radio contact.?

Officials haven't yet identified the passengers or pilot.?

Witnesses described the destruction that started in the air above Ephratah, a sleepy town of about 700 people.?

The parking lot of Granny's Ice Cream Shanty, which is less than a mile from the crash site, was filled with emergency vehicles Saturday morning. Owner Joan Dudley told The Associated Press that she and her employees were among the first at the scene Friday night.?

"We were just leaving to get something to eat, and we heard this noise," Dudley said.?

"We looked up and saw the plane flipping in the air. Then it fell apart," she said. "Parts and pieces of it were flying through the sky, and a body fell out."?

They called 911 as they parked their car and ran to the crash site in the rain to see if they could rescue anyone.?"Airplane parts were all over the place," she said. "They were picking them up all over last night."?

Ephratah resident Roger Berry, 75, said he was outside chopping wood when the plane crashed.?

"When I heard it, I knew something was wrong," Berry said. "It made one circle and came back around."?

Berry said he heard a bang, then saw pieces of the plane fall out of the air. Although most of the plane landed in the pond, Berry said pieces, including the engine, scattered about the area.?

"My neighbor, she was sleeping in her bedroom," Berry said. "The motor fell 50 feet from her bedroom."?

Berry said he ran home to get his raincoat, then assisted rescuers by directing traffic.?

The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating what might have caused the crash.?

Visibility at the time in Rome was 10 miles, said National Weather Service meteorologist Brian Montgomery. It was slightly raining with winds of 13 to 14 mph.?

Angel Flight Northeast said it has set up free air transportation and medical care for more than 65,000 children and adults on about 60,000 flights covering more than 12 million miles. It was founded in 1996.?

NASA creates the first topographic map of Titan, Saturn's largest moon

DNP NASA creates the first topographic map of Titan, Saturn's largest moon

Scientists observing Saturn's moon Titan with NASA's Cassini spacecraft have boldly gone where no man has gone before -- visually, anyway. Using radar imagery collected from nine years of Cassini flybys, researchers were able to patch together the first global topographic map of Titan, published in the July 2013 issue of Icarus. Ralph Lorenz, a member of the Cassini radar team at Johns Hopkins, said, "Titan has so much interesting activity -- like flowing liquids and moving sand dunes -- but to understand these processes it's useful to know how the terrain slopes." In particular, understanding the moon's terrain can reveal a lot about its dynamic climate system. Like Earth, Titan's atmosphere is composed primarily of nitrogen, but the liquids and vapors on the moon's surface are made of methane and other organic chemicals integral to the creation of complex life. By studying the relationship between atmosphere and terrain, researchers hope to learn more about the evolution of life in its earliest stages, and inspire curious minds to turn their eyes toward Titan.

Care For A Spot Of Tea? | Young House Love

Care For A Spot Of Tea?

Guys, I did it. I broke out the sewing machine to make something for Clara?s third birthday. It?s a little tradition of ours to make her something instead of buying it since she gets a ton of store-bought presents from family and friends. I even used her big ol? stash of monthly photo fabrics, which have also come in handy for making her a quilt, a table runner, a beanbag, and even a birthday banner (remember that epic battle of woman vs. sewing machine?).

It all started when I saw these fabric tea bags on Pinterest and thought they?d be really fun for Clara?s play kitchen since she?s so into making food and pretending to eat it and have tea parties with her stuffed animals. And really, what?s a tea party without tea? So even though there weren?t any directions to be found, I thought I?d just wing it. What?s the worst that could happen? Wait, don?t answer that. You?ve seen?my previous work?

First I cut a few little squares from ten of my favorite fabrics.

Then I grabbed some twine that I had in the gift closet for the string part (it?s leftover from a gift someone gave me a while back). I also brought in a few cotton balls from the bathroom because I figured the tea bags had to be stuffed with something. And then I just cut two tea bag shaped pieces of fabric from each swatch (so although you see 10 tea-bag-shaped swatches below, there are two in each stack, right on top of each other for a total of 20). I also cut a long rectangle from each fabric to make the tag on the top of the tea bag.

Then I sat down at the sewing machine, said a small please-don?t-make-me-throw-you-out-the-window prayer, and got sewing. Within about five minutes I had this mess, and had completely ruined my first tea bag. There might have been a few whispered obscenities. Nothing gets me heated like my sewing machine, guys. Nothing.

But I resisted the urge to Hulk Smash it and started in on my second attempt. This time I came up with the idea of putting both of the right sides of the tea bags together (with the bad ones facing out) while tucking the string between it like you see in the photo below. Then I sewed up all of the sides of it except for the bottom where the string sticks out. You can see how bad I am about following the edges of the tea-bag shape here. Better work on that.

Then I turned it right-side out. The good news? The string was securely sewn to the top of the bag. The bad news? It looked like a feminine hygiene product. I allllmost gave up for the second time. There were more mumbled obscenities.

But before I threw in the towel, I figured it might look better if I could tuck half a cotton ball in there, fold the bottom part up to seal it, and add a little stitching to hold it closed, thereby finishing the bag part. Thankfully things started to turn around at this point, because it actually got cute-ish (and less tampon-esque in shape). Hallelujah!

To attach the tag part at the top I just folded that piece of fabric in half and put a few stitches into it so it caught the string and stayed folded.

Then I put my head down, said a few more ?please don?t make me pound you with a hammer? prayers to my sewing machine, and in about ten more minutes I had three more of these guys knocked out. Wahoo!

About half an hour later I was left with nine tea bag babies. They?re definitely not perfect, but that first attempt was my only casualty. And my sewing machine is still alive and well. So?. success!

Clara especially loves them because I have tea every night and most mornings. So she sees me with it and now has her own tea bags so she can sip with me.

So this is the project that almost wasn?t, but is! And I think we all learned a lesson today, guys. No matter how much something looks like a feminine hygiene product when it?s half done, at least try finishing it before flushing it down the toilet. Both literally or figuratively.

Anyone else sewing stuff? How?s your relationship with your sewing machine? I hear that so many people love to sew (and even that it calms them?!) but my experiences can best be described as tumultuous with a side of anxiety. So far in the end it has always been worth it though. And seeing Clara and her stuffed giraffe sitting down for a little tea party is pretty much the cutest thing ever.
