Dr. Debbie Magids: Beating the Blues

It's very hard to stay "blue" 24 hours a day, seven days a week. People have to work hard to do that, which is good news. You have the power -- even if you're experiencing the blues -- to get relief if you want it.

Most of the time, you can help yourself beat the blues by pushing forward into action versus waiting for the blues to officially end. There are three themes when it comes to ridding yourself of the blues. Each one has a goal -- for you to find the place inside that remembers the joy of life and brings out your passion. Within each theme, there are activities you can do to help get you there. Do what speaks to you the most.

Theme #1: Activities that touch your soul. These are things that are solely about your internal experience. These activities will help you start to feel alive inside. Experience live music by seeing concerts, dance, sing (or even go to a karaoke night), go to church or attend another religious of your choosing. Do whatever you know you used to enjoy before the blues set in.

Theme #2: Activities that get your creativity flowing. Feel like you're contributing parts of yourself to the world. This can be very healing. Activities here could be creating a great meal for a loved one or yourself, painting, poetry, scrapbooking, or putting together a photo album. These activities can even be a shared experience with someone else (whether doing them together or sharing the finished product with someone). This will give you a connection to others as well, which is a great way to combat the blues.

Theme #3: Activities that focus on others versus allowing you to remain focused on yourself. Staying down is perpetuated by the constant attention and focus we put on our negative feelings. Helping others really shifts our focus. It's the ultimate way to feel better. Listen to a friend and help them out, visit a sick relative (or someone who's elderly and needs company), or volunteer -- with children, animals, for the park, or for the environment -- in whatever way appeals to you.

There is one thing that can be part of all the above -- laughter. There is scientific evidence that confirms that when we're laughing, it's more difficult for us to feel down. So go to a comedy club, watch your favorite sitcom, or hang with the friend who makes you laugh the most.

Final Thoughts:

  • Connecting with others always helps, so doing the above activities with someone would be great. Even just going for a walk with someone can be very helpful.
  • The blues do pass. Stay hopeful; whatever is getting you down won't last. You will come out of the bad feeling.

Appealing Apps for Educators: How SonicPics amplifies a student?s voice

Since 1999, Carolyn Skibba has served as the technology coordinator at Burley School, a public elementary school in Chicago?s Lakeview community. At Burley, she has taught technology classes for grades K-8, developed technology curricula and integration strategies, led professional development for the school and district, and implemented a 1:1 laptop program. She currently supports the school?s iPad initiative in grades 1-6 and presents frequently on iPad curricular integration and program implementation. Before joining Burley, she was a third grade teacher, an Upward Bound instructor, and received her master?s degree in Technology in Education from Harvard University. She is an Apple Distinguished Educator and a recipient of the 2012 Chicago Public Schools ?Ones to Watch? award. Learn more about Carolyn and Burley?s iPad program at?ipadsatburley.blogspot.com, or by following Carolyn on Twitter, @skibtech.

Educators often describe the iPad as transformative ? a claim I believe to be true. But in order to realize that claim, we need to look for ways to use apps to make new and powerful things possible in the classroom. Now in our third year of an elementary school iPad implementation, my colleagues and I have found that the best apps are those that are versatile, creative, easy to use, and promote sharing. It is those apps that have the capacity to transform instruction and assessment and meaningfully amplify the student voice.

SonicPics is a perfect example of such an app, and it?s one that should be in every elementary iPad classroom. The power of SonicPics is in its simplicity: essentially, it is an app where you can narrate a collection of photos. However, within that simple concept lie multiple transformative strategies for student content creation, assessment of student learning, and differentiation. SonicPics is one of those apps that just works, and once you use it with your students, it will become an app that you turn to again and again.

What it does

SonicPics enables users to generate simple narrated slideshows of photos, screenshots, or other images. In SonicPics, you select photos from your camera roll and then flip through them in sequence while explaining, describing, or otherwise narrating. That?s it. The finished product is a video file. Because the transitions are generated through an intuitive swiping motion, there is no tricky timing to manage for students, and no additional effort is required to synchronize the voice with the images. When a student is ready to talk about the next image, he or she flips to it. This is a process that can be managed independently by students in Kindergarten or even younger. What SonicPics does is beautifully simple and effective, and it unlocks a world of possibilities in the elementary classroom.

Classroom use

SonicPics is one of our go-to apps any time we need to hear from our students about their thinking and learning. This has been especially transformative in three key areas: 1) creating and sharing student work, 2) assessing student skill, knowledge, and understanding, and 3) differentiation.

From the Appolicious Community: Ten Giggly Gorillas from Wasabi Productions offers a complete sensory reading experience and with text highlighting, positive social / moral lessons and 100% family-friendly features, it?s an excellent choice. It?s also on SALE this week for $0.99 (usually $2.99) so why not?download today to enjoy with your 2-6 year old!

1) Creating and sharing student work

SonicPics is one of the simplest multimedia creation tools available, which makes it infinitely usable for content creation by students of all ages and abilities. Students are able to talk and swipe as they move through a set of photographs, drawings, screenshots of text, original artwork, maps, or graphs ? any of the infinite collection of visuals that can appear on the iPad screen or be captured with the camera. The completed video file can easily be exported and shared, giving students a creative and authentic way to publish their thinking for others.

Here are just a small sample of the many ways in which students can use SonicPics to share their knowledge and ideas. As you read these examples, add the words ?to teach others? or ?for a global audience? to each one, and you will begin to sense how this app could make a real difference in the type of work students can create.

  • Create book reviews or book trailers using a combination of photos of the book itself and student drawings of characters, settings or scenes
  • Create ?wonder videos? with drawings and verbal questioning about topics of curiosity inspired by non-fiction reading
  • Publish audiobooks of original student writing with illustrations
  • Record and share student poetry, with original student artwork and recitation
  • Create illustrated audio-visual vocabulary guides
  • Draw and record math challenges for other classmates to solve
  • Use images and narration to explain and describe mathematical concepts
  • Create mini-documentaries about science or social studies topics
  • Create how-to videos or multimedia ?expert books? to share student knowledge
  • Generate narrated photo-essays about community issues to share as public service announcements
  • Design narrated virtual tours of locations around the community or the world
  • Create a classroom news podcast to document and share learning from the day or week

2) Assessing student skill, knowledge, and understanding

Traditional assessments tend to be product-based and can?t fully capture the thinking, wondering, discovery, and analysis that goes on within a student?s mind. When you can hear a student talk about his or her learning, you gain a much richer picture of individual progress, knowledge, and instructional needs. While one on one conversations and conferences are a critical practice, it?s not possible to speak to each student individually about each learning experience. With SonicPics, each student can record his or her thinking process and share it with the teacher, creating an invaluable record of student thinking and reflection over time and documenting student growth in a meaningful way.

Here are some examples of assessment practices with SonicPics:

  • Capture beginning, middle, and end photos from a picture book and retell the story
  • Capture fluency snapshots of self-selected text, where students photograph a passage and then record their reading in SonicPics
  • Flip through images of new vocabulary, explaining and utilizing words correctly
  • Take photos of other work or projects, explaining and describing choices made during the creation process
  • Draw and speak about visualizing, connections, or questioning during reading
  • Draw and speak about new facts and information obtained during a non-fiction read-aloud, independent reading, or research
  • Select comparable or contrasting images and narrate an explanation
  • Sequence and narrate photos from a book, an historical time period, a scientific process, etc.
  • Narrate photos of a science experiment to retell the process and highlight key questions or discoveries
  • Take photos of a mathematical problem solving process and narrate each step, thereby revealing strategies used and any misconceptions held
  • Analyze and explain relationships between images connected to themes in science and social studies

3) Differentiation

Not all students express themselves best in writing. While this is most obvious in the early childhood or special education classroom, we know that students of all ages benefit from varied, multimodal opportunities to express their knowledge and ideas. Because of the built-in camera, anything that can be seen, created, or experienced can be saved as images. Once you pull up those images in SonicPics, whatever a student can express, explain, or ask about those images can be saved and shared. This is a transformative opportunity for any teacher who wants their students to have choice and variety in how they express themselves ? or for any teacher who wants peek ?under the hood? and really understand the complexity of student thought.

Tech tips

SonicPics provides you with various options for collecting and sharing finished student videos. There is direct upload to YouTube, which may be an option for some teachers. A more controlled option is Send to Computer, in which SonicPics displays an IP address (a sequence of numbers) that you can type into the address bar of any browser, essentially giving you a direct, temporary wifi link between the iPad and a computer for quick access to SonicPics videos. SonicPics will also allow you to email videos, but that option is best for short projects. Finally, Save to Library will put the finished video into the iPad Photo Library for additional editing or embellishment in iMovie, use in other apps, or upload to other sharing sites.

Curiosity's unsung skill: scouting Mars for a human mission (+video)

NASA's Curiosity rover is on Mars to look for signs that Gale Crater was once suitable for microbial life. But Curiosity's weather instruments are providing insight into the environment astronauts might face on Mars.

By Pete Spotts,?Staff writer / November 15, 2012

This image from the Mast Camera on NASA's Curiosity rover shows the upper portion of a wind-blown deposit dubbed 'Rocknest.' The rover team recently commanded Curiosity to take a scoop of soil from a region located out of frame, below this view.

Earlier this month, two tiny twisters buffeted NASA's Mars rover Curiosity in the space of 11 minutes. They were two of 21 whirlwinds the rover has detected from its home in Gale Crater so far ? with more expected as Mars' southern hemisphere enters its spring and summer.

In one sense, this seems like a ho-hum observation. Whirlwinds and dust devils are common on Mars, although no evidence of them had been found in images of Gale Crater taken from orbit.

But they represent a very important element of the planet's dust cycle, which is a key driver of Mars' climate, says Manuel de la Torre Juarez, a physicist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. Their presence inside the crater, combined with the most sophisticated atmospheric monitoring station humans have landed on the planet, give scientists an unprecedented opportunity to unravel the role these mini-twisters play in Mars' current climate.

The opportunity highlights a little-heralded role for Curiosity, whose primary mission is to analyze rocks and soil to determine if the crater might have once been a suitable habitat for microbial life. The rover and its weather station and radiation monitor are monitoring today's environment, both with an eye toward understanding the evolution of the planet's atmosphere over billions of years, but also as a gauge of the hazards astronauts might face during a potential mission.

One story that is unfolding involves the changing thickness of the atmosphere with each Martian day, called a sol, and even with seasonal changes. Those changes impact the amount of radiation ? cosmic rays and charged particles from the sun ? reaching the surface.

For instance, sensors on the Rover Environmental Monitoring Station (REMS) have detected an unexpected and large day-night shift in atmospheric pressure, corresponding to changes the sun brings to the atmosphere. During the day, the atmosphere heats, expands, and grows less dense as it does so. This reduces the amount of pressure the atmosphere exerts on pressure sensors. At night, when temperatures drop to about minus 130 degrees Fahrenheit, the pressure increases as the atmosphere contracts and grows more dense.

At the same time, the rover's Radiation Assessment Detector (RAD) has found that cosmic and other forms of radiation peak during the day and drop at night as changes to the atmosphere thicken or thin this tenuous shield.

"Big Bang Theory" actress Mayim Bialik, husband divorcing

NEW YORK (Reuters) - "The Big Bang Theory" actress Mayim Bialik and her husband are divorcing after nine years of marriage, she said in a statement on her Facebook page.

Bialik, who starred in the 1990s sitcom "Blossom," and Michael Stone have two sons together.

"Divorce is terribly sad, painful and incomprehensible for children," Bialik, 36, said in the statement. "It is not something we have decided lightly."

Bialik, a proponent of "attachment parenting" who authored a book on the subject that was published in September, said it "played no role" in the couple's divorce.

Attachment parenting advocates the nurturing of strong bonds between parents and children, which can include extended breast-feeding and parents and children sleeping in the same bed until the children are as old as 7. A controversial Time magazine cover on the subject in May drew strong reactions across the United States.

"The main priority for us now is to make the transition to two loving homes as smooth and painless as possible," Bialik wrote in the statement, which was posted to her Facebook page on Wednesday. "Our sons deserve parents committed to their growth and health and that's what we are focusing on."

"We will be OK," the statement concludes.

Bialik is a former child star who appeared in the 1980s television series "Webster" and "The Facts of Life" before landing the title role in the coming-of-age television show "Blossom," which ran from 1991 to 1995. The show was about a smart teenage girl whose parents have divorced and is learning about life.

The actress attended the University of California, Los Angeles, where she obtained a doctorate in neuroscience.

She met Michael Stone, a fellow graduate student, in calculus class, according to a description of her wedding she previously posted online.

In her most recent role on CBS comedy "The Big Bang Theory," Bialik plays Amy Farrah Fowler, a neuroscientist who dates one of the two main stars of the show, the socially inept but brilliant physicist Sheldon Cooper.

American Express Teams Up With Stores For Small Business Saturday

REDLANDS (CBSLA.com) ? Small business owners in Redlands and across America are hoping for a big turnout during Small Business Saturday.

?Redlands is completely built on the small businesses,? said Mike Eubanks, who owns a small kid?s shoe store. ?We?ll be open for Small Business Saturday and we?re expecting a lot of people to come on down.?

American Express came up with the idea three years ago to encourage people to buy from independent retailers during the holiday weekend.

The credit card company will reward shoppers who spend at least $25 using their American Express card at small businesses by refunding $25 back into their account.

Deborah Foland, who owns Devi?s clothing store on Main Street, said low prices and excellent customer service are the keys to competing with larger retailers.

?Nobody treats the customer the way we do,? said Foland, who opened the store 25 years ago.

Shop owners pointed out that the money spent in Redlands stays in the community.

?You see me at the grocery store, and at your kid?s plays, and I sponsor the teams?in Redlands, that?s where the money should stay,? Eubanks said.

By NBCNewYork.com and The Associated Press

NEW YORK -- A man suspected of killing three Brooklyn shopkeepers has been charged after he made statements implicating himself and after forensic investigators linked him to the murder scenes, authorities announced Wednesday.?

Salvatore Perrone, 63, was charged with three counts of murder Wednesday afternoon, authorities said.?

Responding to a tip call, authorities picked up Perrone in Bay Ridge Tuesday while looking to question a person they called "John Doe Duffel Bag," the?balding man with a mustache who was seen on surveillance video?near the scene of the latest slaying and who was linked to a video in an earlier incident.?

Police had been investigating the series of deadly shootings?of Brooklyn business owners of Middle Eastern descent since the first one occurred in July.?

Law enforcement sources say Perrone made statements placing himself near the scene of the shooting at the?Valentino Fashion Inc.?in Bay Ridge on July 6.??Mohamed Gebeli, 65, an Egyptian immigrant and a Muslim, was found shot in the back of his shop. Detectives found .22-caliber gun shell casings at that crime scene and also at the scene where?Isaac Kadare, 59, also Egyptian but Jewish, was shot in the head in his Amazing 99 Cent Deal store Aug. 6.

The latest victim, 78-year-old?Rahmatollah Vahidipour, a Jewish man from Iran, was killed in his women's clothing boutique on Flatbush Avenue Friday. The same casings were found at that scene.?

"It's reasonable to assume he was going to continue doing this," Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said?in a news conference Wednesday. "He went to other locations and asked questions that indicated he may have been planning to come back.

A law enforcement official said a Ruger rifle with a sawed-off stock and an improvised combination laser/light attached to its barrel was found early Wednesday in a duffel bag at Perrone's girlfriend's Brooklyn home. ?Also contained in the bag were 30 copper-coated hollow-point bullets, latex gloves, women's clothing, a 12-inch steak knife with a substance that may be blood, a fabric color chart and black plastic bags with a substance that may be blood on it, the source said.

Authorities say it is the same duffel bag seen in the surveillance video at the scene of two slayings. The weapon uses .22 ammunition consistent with ballistics found at each of the three crime scenes connected to the case, law enforcement sources said.

Authorities also found .22-caliber ammunition, three knives, one of which appeared to have blood on it, black gloves and women's pantyhose with the legs cut off in the duffel bag, a law enforcement official said. The blood on the recovered knife is being tested for DNA evidence.

Law enforcement sources say Perrone's girlfriend and ex-wife are cooperating with detectives. Sources say he is a fabric and garment salesman, and has several prior arrests, including for stalking and burglary, in Pennsylvania.?

A woman who lived across the street from Perrone's former home on Staten Island said the divorced father of one was a peculiar neighbor and that he used to sing opera loudly from his front yard at odd hours of the night.

"He was just that crazy neighbor," said Julia Marra, 21, who nevertheless viewed Perrone as harmless.

It appeared Perrone was trying to sell his home on the corner of Clove Road and Beverly Avenue on Staten Island. The structure was visibly in disrepair and in need of rehabilitation Wednesday. A phone number listed on the for sale sign in the yard connected to a voice mailbox belonging to Perrone.?

Detectives who specialize in hate crimes and FBI analysts who specialize in behavioral analysis joined the case this week, authorities said.

"The possibility of a bias motive here is something that can't be excluded," Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said Monday.

The bodies were all partially obscured by clothing or, in one case, a box. The shops all lacked surveillance cameras, and the owners were alone in the store. The locations of the shops are each about 4 miles apart, with addresses that contain the number eight. Money was taken from everyone but Vahidipour, who had $171 in his pocket.

Kelly said it's reasonable to think the shooter had canvassed the area to find locations where no cameras existed.?"Here you have three stores where the proprietor is there by himself, no cameras in any of these," he said. "You'd have to speculate that some sort of reconnaissance was going on before the murders took place."

Insomnia/obstructive sleep apnoea and sickness absence ...

Photo by Alex E. Proimos via Flickr, under Creative Commons Licence

An article published in October 2012 in the Journal of Sleep Research reported on a study into the separate and combined effects of symptoms of insomnia and obstructive sleep apnoea (snoring and breathing cessations) on long-term sick leave. The research was carried out with 6,892 people aged 40-45 in Norway and showed that workers who suffer either insomnia or obstructive sleep apnoea are at increased risk of sickness absence.

Insomnia can be described as the inability to fall asleep or to stay awake as long as desired. Obstructive sleep apnoea occurs when the throat muscles relax during sleep allowing the airway to collapse or become plugged by the tongue. This causes the airflow to stop and causes the person to jolt awake and gasp for air as the brain senses distress. This can go on hundreds of times a night without the person realising it.

The research in Norway showed that individuals with insomnia were twice as likely to be on subsequent sick leave as good sleepers. The increased risk of sickness absence was less pronounced for those with obstructive sleep apnoea but was still 40% higher than for good sleepers.

There is a strong connection between stress and insomnia (although not everyone who is suffering from stress has insomnia). Where a person is suffering from stress-related insomnia, there are steps they could take to reduce it, for example:

  • spending some time ?winding down? about two hours before going to bed in order to de-stress. This means avoiding phone calls, emails, etc. and, ideally, reading, listening to music or having a bath in order to empty the mind;
  • establishing a regular sleep routine of going to bed only when tired and getting up at the same time each day;
  • not eating food late in the evening;
  • developing a night-time relaxation routine (e.g. breathing exercises or routines to tense and relax all muscles from the toes upwards).

Obstructive sleep apnoea is not caused by stress, rather by physical factors such as the size and ?floppiness? of the airway and the ability of the brain to ?remember? to breathe. However, there is little doubt that the many possible effects of sleep apnoea (e.g. sleepiness, lack of mental alertness, hypertension) may well contribute to stress as a person struggles to cope day-to-day after prolonged periods of inadequate sleep.

Employees in an organisation who are struggling with insomnia, obstructive sleep apnoea or other sleeping disorders are unlikely to be at their most productive and, at worst, may risk a health and safety risk to themselves or others in the workplace. Guidance on various sleep disorders can be found at the British Snoring and Sleep Apnoea Association, the National Sleep Foundation and the The Sleep Council. Alternatively, a free phone call to the Health for Work Adviceline on 0800 0 77 88 44 will connect employers and managers to an occupational health professional to discuss this and other employee health issues.

Guess What?Guys Don't Just Want Sex | The Daily Affair

Wednesday Nov 21, 2012 - BY Stacey

Photo via CC

Conventional and movie wisdom has taught us the following?women want relationships and wedding china. Men, on the other hand, are horny pigs who are only interested in sex.

?

This idea gets trotted out in nearly every movie that purports to represent the male experience or anytime a prominent male is caught having an affair (General Petraeus anyone?).

?

But what if the conventional wisdom has it all wrong? What if men are more relationship minded than we?re giving them credit for?

?

The evidence of this is both anecdotal and scientific. On a personal level, I?ve heard many young women complain about being with the men who want serious relationships when the ladies only desire a less serious attachment and sex. And then on the more researched end, psychologist Andrew P. Smiler dispels the popular myth in his new book,?Challenging Casanova: Beyond the Stereotype of the Promiscuous Young Male.

?

Smiler challenges the orthodoxy when it comes to male sexuality, asking??If Casonova-style promiscuity is men?s naturally evolved state, then why do most men want no more than one partner?? Smiler notes that the Casanova average is three partners per year. While there certainly are men who fit the ?Casanova? label, it?s not representative for most of them.

?

Tracy Clark Flory, Salon?s excellent sex columnist, interviewed Smiler and got him to address the oft-cited ?evolutionary biology? argument, which has been used to justify the existence of the ?promiscuous? male:

?

The evolutionary argument basically goes that guys have the ability, theoretically, to produce hundreds of children per year, and they can never quite be 100 percent sure that any child is theirs, so they should spread their seed widely. But what gets left out of that is the fact that if you want your genes to go beyond that next generation ? beyond your children to your grandchildren, then your odds are better if you actually stick around and help raise that kid until that kid is old enough to pass on his or her genes.

?

So that?s the part of the evolutionary argument that tends to get left out of the debate. But does it actually matter that we seemed to have misunderstood young men?s sexuality? Is it a bad thing if we think that they are only desirous of many partners and a no-strings attached approach to sex?

?

Well, first there?s the impact that this type of thinking has on female sexuality. Explicitly and implicitly, we teach girls from a young age that men want sex and only sex and that men have to be enticed or tricked into relationships. According to Smiler, this might push young women to cross sexual lines in order to convince a man to settle down in a relationship.

?

We?re giving girls the wrong percentages which makes them perhaps behave in ways in which they wouldn?t behave otherwise ? starting your contact with somebody sexually instead of relationally, for example.

?

And finally, Smiler commented on the scandal of the month?Petraeus. Far from being a lust monster out of control with desire, Smiler argued that the general didn?t merely choose to hook up with a stranger for the sake of an orgasm.

?

If we just write it off as, ?Oh, it?s just another guy trying to get some on the side,? then we really miss the fact that this extramarital affair really has at its basis a relationship. This is a guy having sex within a relational context.

?

Understood in this light, the affair, while still a terrible betrayal, is far less tawdry. But it makes sense. If sex was the only object then why didn?t Petraeus seek out a different woman to sleep with? Why choose someone from his own circle?

?

Perhaps it?s because when it comes to sex and relationships, men and women aren?t as far apart in what they want than previously thought.

Chevy Chase Exiting "Community"

NEW YORK (TheWrap.com) - Chevy Chase is leaving "Community" after a rocky run on the NBC series.

The actor is leaving by mutual agreement with the show's producers, a person close to the show told TheWrap. He will appear in most of the 13 episodes of the show's upcoming fourth season, but not the final one or two episodes.

Chase had a very public feud with former showrunner Dan Harmon that included Harmon airing an angry rant by Chase. The situation hardly improved when new showrunners Moses Port and David Guarascio took over this season.

The original "Saturday Night Live" player reportedly used the N-word last month in an on-set rant complaining about the racism of his character, Pierce Hawthorne. Chase asked how far the character's bigotry would go, and whether he would be forced to say the word. He later apologized.

Chase made little effort to hide his mixed feelings about the show, telling the Huffington Post in March, "I probably won't be around that much longer, frankly."

"I have creative issues with this show," he said. "I always have. With my character, with how far you can take character ... just to give him a long speech about the world at the end of every episode is so reminiscent. It's like being relegated to hell and watching 'Howdy Doody' for the rest of your life. It's not particularly necessary, but that's the way they do these things. I think it belies the very pretenses that his character, Jeff, has, that he's giving these talks. They're supposed to, in some way, be a little lesson to people who watch sitcoms ... to that degree, I can't stand sitcoms. ... I think, if you know me and my humor over the years, you know that this is certainly not my kind of thing."

"Community" returns February 7.

Pasadena considers whether to host NFL team at Rose Bowl

Many Pasadena residents who live near the Rose Bowl complain that the city's proposal to host an NFL team for up to five years would invite massive traffic jams, unleash rowdy fan behavior and displace recreational users from the Arroyo Seco.

The Pasadena Chamber of Commerce and others say the prospect of millions of dollars in public revenue and game-related local spending is a windfall well worth the inconveniences.

On Monday, the City Council will hold a public hearing to decide what course the city may pursue.

Both the disaster and money-making scenarios are speculative. No NFL team has committed to Southern California despite years of talk, and the Los Angeles Coliseum is another option as a temporary home while a permanent new NFL stadium is built.

But if talks with the NFL are to begin, Pasadena leaders must pass an ordinance to increase the number of large events allowed at the Rose Bowl from 12 to 25 each year, approve an associated environmental study and adopt a "statement of overriding considerations" that pro football's potential benefits outweigh its downsides.

A Nov. 5 report by Barrett Sports Group, a Manhattan Beach consulting firm hired by the city, estimates that NFL games would raise $5 million to $10 million a year for the city-owned stadium, where costs for an ongoing renovation have spiraled to nearly $195 million. The gap between the funds Rose Bowl officials have and what they estimate they need has reached $30 million.

City Council members declined to say how they would vote on Monday, but several said the renovation cost was a factor.

Councilwoman Margaret McAustin said the city would seek to reduce impacts on Rose Bowl neighbors if it decided to go ahead with the plan.

"It's not that we'll do this at all costs ? [but] we have to keep in mind that the Rose Bowl is a football stadium," she said. "We're not spending $200 million to preserve it as a museum."

Mayor Bill Bogaard, who opposed a 2005 plan to bring pro football to the Rose Bowl permanently and give the NFL control over stadium renovations, said he was giving this plan serious thought. "That funding gap would be relieved if we were to strike the right deal with the NFL," he said.

But the right deal remains elusive, said Linda Vista-Annandale Assn. President Nina Chomsky, an opponent of the plan.

"They are trying to more than double the amount of events at the Rose Bowl without any contract or deal that tells us what the full impacts will be, so any attempt to mitigate those impacts is speculative," Chomsky said.

The city's 688-page environmental study found that NFL games would result in "significant and unavoidable" traffic congestion, emissions, noise and disruptions in the central Arroyo Seco.

The arrival of more than 25,000 vehicles during eight home games, two preseason games and possible playoff matches would disrupt joggers and prompt the Kidspace Museum, Rose Bowl Aquatic Center and Brookside Golf Course to go dark on those Sundays.

Chomsky added that back-to-back college and pro games would clog the area for entire weekends.

Sixty-four letters and two petitions were submitted as public comment on the environmental study, most against the proposal.

Several writers expressed fears that NFL games would attract alcohol-fueled and criminal mischief, with one Arroyo resident imagining "ever-expanding cultural crassness" on game days.

Contemporary Services Corp., which handles security at the Rose Bowl and stadiums throughout the country, countered in a Nov. 5 report to the city that "our experience has indicated that NFL fans are generally more orderly than college football fans."

Ways To Build And Boost SEO With Web Marketing

This article will provide some great tips on the world of Web marketing and how it might be able to help your business. These simple and effective strategies are easy to understand, so you can start using them right away.

Web marketing thrives on capitalizing on advancement in modern technology. If your company fails at using technology, your customers will notice and may begin to not trust your company. On the other hand, if you demonstrate a willingness to take risks and employ cutting-edge business tactics, customers will respect your innovative practices.

Consider creating a glossary if you want your readers to consider you an expert in your field. This will help everyone who visits your website. Many people who are looking for your terms will ultimately find themselves on your website. This will give you a large amount of exposure, which will make you a trusted expert.

A great title tag should properly define you and your content. The tag for your site, at the top of the browser window, is a big factor in how people see your site. Poorly written website tags don?t convey the message that you need to send to draw and keep the reader?s attention.

Offer an array of payment options to ensure maximum opportunity for sales. Not everyone has credit cards or even a bank account, so offering another option can help increase your sales.

Be certain that the information you provide to customers when you promote your business is appropriate. Aim to have content that is worthwhile and unique. Keeping your information fresh and updated is extremely helpful for visitors to your website.

You could add some user polls alongside your specific content to get readers? views and feedback. This will enable you to know what type of content your users find appealing, and this will greatly help you in making business decisions.

Split your website into sections, and have a map from which people can choose the products they?d like to see. Be sure to offer plenty of ways for people to check out your products, while still properly organizing your site.

It?s not imperative to spend thousands of dollars on a marketing consultant. A quick search on the internet can offer many free resources to help you with your marketing needs. There are online communities, blogs, e-books, and seminars available to help you out.

Mobile marketing should also be considered. Mobile marketing gives your customers instant updates on your products and promotions. This is the latest in digital advertising, and it will be a boon to any Internet promotion campaign.

Think of a service or some way to help people out that come to your site. Free offers always catch people?s eye and they will often revisit your site looking for other good things, as well. Free tools such as a calculator to help do tax returns are a good choice for a financial website to offer.

Remember every detail when it comes to each page on your site. The title should be near the top corner of each page as well as a description of your site. Visitors may get to different pages, depending on their search. If they do not know exactly what your page has to offer, they may simply leave.

You now have some excellent new knowledge to increase your Online marketing prowess. Apply the strategies that you think will best fit your company. Use this advice and find success with your Web marketing efforts.

UCLA Beats USC 38-28: Bruins Clinch Pac-12 South

PASADENA, Calif. ? When Anthony Barr roared through the line and hit Matt Barkley squarely in the No. 7 on his back, the roar rising out of the Rose Bowl was loud enough for a whole city to hear.

After so many years underneath Southern California, UCLA is on top of Los Angeles and the Pac-12 South, thanks to a first-year head coach and a freshman quarterback who don't realize they've done something that's not usual.

"Well, it is for me," Jim Mora said.

Brett Hundley passed for 234 yards and a touchdown and rushed for two more scores as No. 17 UCLA beat No. 21 USC 38-28 Saturday, clinching the Pac-12 South title and emphatically snapping a five-game losing streak in their crosstown showdown.

Eric Kendricks blocked a punt and made a fourth-quarter interception for the Bruins (9-2, 6-2 Pac-12), who overcame intermittent second-half rain and USC's star-studded lineup with a steady effort.

"When the season started, obviously nobody thought we were going to do what we're doing now," said Hundley, who went 22 for 30 and didn't throw an interception. "But we all knew deep down inside that we could do it, that we had the talent. We can do everything we set our mind to, as long as we work hard."

A year after USC obliterated the Bruins 50-0 in a game that led to a coaching change in Westwood, UCLA punctuated its one-year revitalization under Mora with its first win over the Trojans (7-4, 5-4) since 2006 ? just their second in 14 years. The Bruins celebrated in the corner of the Rose Bowl and again with an impromptu dance-off in the locker room, even while Mora reminded them they've still got three games to play.

"It's a great moment, and I'm excited," said Mora, the winningest first-year coach in UCLA history. "I can't wait to hug my mom, shake my dad's hand and kiss my kids. I don't want to minimize it at all."

Johnathan Franklin rushed for 171 yards and two touchdowns for UCLA, including a clutch 29-yard scoring run with 4:02 to play after USC trimmed its deficit to three points.

Shaquelle Evans had eight catches for 114 yards for UCLA, which clinched a spot in the Pac-12 title game in two weeks with its fifth consecutive win. The Bruins also played in that game last year, but only by default after finishing two games behind postseason-banned USC.

Everything has changed in Los Angeles this season: UCLA entered this showdown with a higher ranking and more victories than USC for the first time in a decade, and the Bruins backed it up.

"It's a great night, but we've got so many things we still want to do," Franklin said. "We're going to enjoy it, but we were confident coming into this game."

Barkley passed for 301 yards and three touchdowns, but threw two interceptions in the Trojans' third loss in four games. USC was the preseason's No. 1 team, but will return to the postseason in a lower-tier bowl after next week's regular-season finale against Notre Dame.

"You wouldn't think we would lose this game with a senior quarterback versus a freshman," USC coach Lane Kiffin said. "We're extremely disappointed with this season. We're too talented to have that many losses."

While Hundley led UCLA with the same preternatural calm he has shown all year, Barkley threw an interception on the game's first play and rarely looked comfortable. Barkley was hammered on a blind-side sack by Barr with 2:21 to play, spending a long moment on the Rose Bowl turf before walking off gingerly and watching USC's final drive from the sideline.

Nelson Agholor and Randall Telfer caught TD passes for the Trojans, and Curtis McNeal rushed for 158 yards. Marqise Lee had nine catches for 158 yards, and All-American Robert Woods had five catches for 68 yards.

"UCLA did a great job, but we're very disappointed," said Lee, who had a key early fumble. "We all knew about the stakes in this rivalry game, and we competed. ... Other people, they'll be sad. But to me, we came out against a great team and had too many turnovers."

Franklin and Joseph Fauria scored while UCLA jumped out to an early 24-0 lead under a morning mist that turned into serious rain by halftime at the Rose Bowl.

USC trimmed its huge early deficit to 24-20 on George Uko's fumble recovery in the end zone in the third quarter. The Trojans pulled within 31-28 with Lee's 14-yard TD catch and a 2-point conversion with 7:22 to play.

But Hundley and the Bruins coolly mounted an 83-yard drive, converting a long third down before Franklin ? UCLA's career rushing leader, nicknamed Jet Ski ? sped across the watery turf for the clinching score.

After Aaron Hester intercepted Barkley's first pass into double coverage, Hundley scored on a 1-yard keeper just 81 seconds in to give UCLA its first lead in the rivalry game since 2008. The interception was Barkley's 14th of the season, doubling his total as a junior and matching his mark as a mediocre freshman in 2009.

After Lee fumbled while curiously lined up as a tailback, UCLA went up 17-0 on Hundley's pretty fade to the 6-foot-7 Fauria. Franklin then made a 16-yard TD run up the middle in the second quarter.

A significant rain began to fall at halftime, and it immediately bothered the Bruins on a wacky play during their opening drive. Hundley and Franklin both fumbled before two diving linemen knocked the ball into the end zone, where Uko fell on it.

The teams both wore their home jerseys on the verdant Rose Bowl turf in a return to the distinctive tradition that was revived a few years ago. UCLA abandoned the tradition last year, inexplicably choosing its rivalry game to debut an all-white ensemble that hasn't been seen since its 50-point thrashing.
