"Troubling ineptitude" in security at nuclear bomb plant

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Guards at a government plant for storing weapons-grade uranium failed to spot activists, including an 82-year-old nun, who cut through its fences until they walked up to an officer's car and surrendered, an official report said on Friday.

The report from the Energy Department's inspector general, Gregory Friedman, criticized multiple failures of sophisticated security systems and "troubling displays of ineptitude" at the plant in Oak Ridge, Tennessee in July.

Three anti-nuclear activists, including an 82-year-old nun, were not initially spotted or detained as they cut through three perimeter fences on July 28.

They painted slogans and threw what they said was human blood on the outer wall of a building where highly enriched uranium, a key component of nuclear bombs, is stored.

The facility is run by Babcock & Wilcox Co and is responsible for security provided by contractor WSI Oak Ridge, owned by international security firm G4S.

Spokespersons for the contractors did not immediately return calls requesting comment.

The building they vandalized was built after the September 11, 2001 al Qaeda attacks on New York and Washington and had been previously touted as "the Fort Knox of uranium" by a senior government official because of its security features.

Friedman's report said the government had budgeted about $150 million in taxpayer funds for security at the plant for fiscal 2012, yet the officer responding to the alarm did not notice the trespassers until they walked up to his car and "surrendered."

The officer did not draw his weapon nor secure the area, instead letting the trespassers "roam about and retrieve various items from backpacks," the report said.

Another officer hearing alarms did not look outside the building as he was supposed to, and also missed an image of the trespassers on a camera. A third officer turned off the alarm.

Others heard the activists hammering on the building's outside wall, but assumed the sound was from maintenance workers.

"The actions of these officers were inconsistent with the gravity of the situation and existing protocols," Friedman said in the report.

One camera that would have shown the break-in had been broken for about six months, and there was a backlog of repairs needed for security systems at the facility, the report said.

"We found this to be troubling," Friedman said.

Thomas D'Agostino, the administrator of the National Nuclear Security Administration, the Energy Department branch responsible for U.S. nuclear weapons, said changes were underway after the incident.

D'Agostino said staff involved with the incident had been removed, cameras have been fixed, and patrols and training stepped up.

"These steps are just the beginning of the structural and cultural changes that we intend to make," D'Agostino said in a written response included in the report.

The NNSA was also assessing security at all of its facilities, he said, and notified Babcock & Wilcox earlier this month that its contract could be terminated. The company has 30 days to respond to the "show cause" letter.

Coral scientists use new model to find where corals are most likely to survive climate change

ScienceDaily (Aug. 29, 2012) ? Marine conservationists from the Wildlife Conservation Society working with other coral reef experts have identified heat-tolerant coral species living in locations with continuous background temperature variability as those having the best chance of surviving climate change, according to a new simplified method for measuring coral reef resilience.

Therefore, coral reefs with these characteristics should receive immediate attention for conserving this highly threatened ecosystem, according to the authors of a study appearing August 30 in the online journal PLoS ONE.

The bewildering diversity of coral reef environments has made assessing and prioritizing them costly, and yet they require immediate action to respond to the threats of climate change. Combining expert opinion and scientific evidence, the scientists developed a simplified assessment that reduces this complexity to 11 key and easily measured factors. This finding greatly simplifies and reduces the time needed for assessments and, therefore, gives coral reef managers a cost-effective, evidence-based tool for gauging a reef's chances of survival.

"Coral reefs are astoundingly complex systems," said Dr. Tim McClanahan, lead author of the study and head of WCS's coral reef research and conservation program. "This reality sometimes leads to the assumption that evaluations and management strategies must also be complex. Our study reveals, however, that effective conservation decisions may hinge on a few easily measurable factors, and this can promote faster management actions."

The study streamlines a previous approach to measuring the resilience of coral reefs by squaring a currently used assessment models with expert opinions and existing data sets. Focusing on a comprehensive field study undertaken by WCS in Karimunjawa Marine Park, located on the coast of Java in Indonesia, McClanahan and his co-authors examined a previously employed complex and expensive assessment protocol that included over 60 factors -- herbivorous fish diversity, bio-erosion rates, hard coral cover, and many others -- in order to determine which factors were most important.

Using a filtering methodology using surveys and scientific literature, the research team winnowed the list to 11 easily measured factors. Among these, the most important factors favoring resilience are heat-resistant coral species and background temperature variability.

The researchers than used the data collected in the previous comprehensive survey of Karimunjawa Marine Park and reassessed it with the new model. The priorities reached were not the same as the first assessment, which suggested that largely unimportant factors biased the selection of sites in the first assessment while increasing the costs of the investigation.

While the new model offers a potentially valuable, cost-effective tool in ranking the resilience of coral reef systems, McClanahan said that further research is needed to evaluate the priority and types of heat-resistant corals and temperature variability needed for conservation planning. He added that one of the more exciting outputs was that the study prioritized future investigations by identifying factors that are least agreed on among scientists and that have the highest potential to promote the resilience of coral reefs.

"This method gives us a foundation for what could become an indispensible assessment tool for identifying conservation priorities," added McClanahan. "We suspect this protocol will drive investigations for the next decade."

Italianni's Restaurant: New Menu and Better Gateway Branch ~ The ...

When one craves for pasta, pizza and even wine on the side, there's no doubt that the top of mind choice will always be Italianni's. And with a promise of great food, great wine and great company, despite being partial on Asian cuisine, I just can't say no when I got invited to check out their new offerings at the newly-renovated Italianni's in Gateway.

Even as a northie, I don't frequent the Cubao area, so I didn't have an expectation of the newly-renovated Italianni's at Gateway. However upon entering the restaurant, I was reminded of the cozy ambiance of their Trinoma branch -- bright, elegant and a little quaint. Heading to the second floor though, I noticed that the space has a dimmer lighting than most of their branches which made the place seem more intimate and laid back.
Upon checking Italianni's new menu, I was surprised that they were able to expand their already-wide list of Italian goodies. But of course, before we got to dig in on the new food items, we first enjoyed the traditional complimentary bread which can successfully whet and delight the appetite when dipped in rosemary olive oil and balsamic vinegar.

The New Dishes

After a simple yet satisfying start, it was finally time to get a taste of the new dishes at Italianni's. And to officially start off our dinner, we first sampled the new appetizer items.

Being a seafood lover, I just had to try the Crisp-Fried Shrimps Pescatore (P275), a serving of Fisherman?s style deep-fried shrimps with vinegar dip and garlic bread on the side. This seafood treat isn't only crispy and flavorful, but so addicting to munch as well as there's no need to peel off the shrimp from its shell. Let's all rejoice lazy foodies!
We also tried the Italian Pockets (P350), crisp-fried special dough with three kinds of fillings -- chicken & shrimp, mushroom & bacon, and tuna & spinach. All three flavors of these crispy pockets were savory and flavorful in their own right. However, my favorite would probably be the tuna and spinach, followed by the mushroom and bacon.
We were then served with an Alaskan Crab Dip (P395), a baked goodness of Alaskan crab, white wine, mozzarella cheese and cream served with pita and garlic bread. Although I'm generally not a fan of creamy dips, I really enjoyed this cheesy and crabby treat especially when eaten with the slightly crispy and interestingly chewy pita bread.
For pasta, we first tried the Shrimp Penne Mascarpone (P525), a creamy plate of penne pasta, zucchini slices and shrimp pieces tossed in a light cream sauce and then topped with mascarpone cheese. I may not be a big pasta fan, but this is so good! The al dente-cooked pasta and toppings were already a delight to eat. However, the mascarpone cheese had really taken this dish up a whole notch. Molto delizioso!
We also got to sample the Broccoli and Asparagus Ravioli (P450), a serving of paper-thin pasta filled with ricotta cheese, broccoli and asparagus. Although I personally liked this pasta dish, non-veggie fans might not be so pleased. The ravioli pieces may be swimming in a creamy sauce, but the pasta tastes strongly of broccoli and asparagus.
Another new item is the Caricato Pizza (P525), a mozzarella stuffed crust treat loaded with garlic sausages, chicken strips, bacon, bell peppers, Gorgonzola blue cheese, cranberries and mushrooms. The pizza toppings might be unusual for some, but I definitely dig the blend of savory, sweet and slightly bitter flavors in this Italian favorite.
We also had a taste of the Angus Steak Pizza (P575), a sure meat lover pleaser loaded with minced angus beef, green bell peppers, mozzarella cheese, caramelized onions and mushroom cream sauce over a chewy flat bread pizza. And although I loved the Caricato, this meaty goodness instantly became my favorite between the two as every bite was an explosion of succulent beef flavors with a hint of sweetness and tang.
If you think we were already through with the main course, then think again. After a pasta and pizza fest, we followed it up with a serving of T-bone (P1,750) -- grilled U.S. t-bone steak served with pepper sauce, mushroom risotto and seasonal vegetables. We had our steak cooked in medium doneness, and it was definitely a carnivore pleaser! Even without the pepper sauce, the meat was already very tender and oh-so-succulent. The mushroom risotto and veggies it came with were also very enjoyable. Simply delizioso!
Another carnivore pleaser is the Crispy Pork Ribs (P425), Italian spices-marinated pork ribs, deep fried and served with spicy scallion dip, garlic rice and seasonal vegetables. While I still prefer the t-bone, this crispy pork treat is as tender and as succulent. The meat literally falls off the bone, and can easily satisfy both portion-wise and flavor-wise.

The Old Favorites

The new dishes are definitely worth giving a shot. But of course, we didn't miss the chance to sample old-timers which never fail to make patrons visit back again and again.

I easily fell in love with the Stuffed Mushrooms (P450 Regular; P675 Abbondanza), a plate of oven-roasted mushroom caps stuffed with fresh spinach, herbs, Italian sausage and three Italian cheeses. As a mushroom lover, this definitely satisfied my craving as every bite gives off a smoky mushroom and savory sausage flavor with a bit of a tang.
We also had the Seafood Cioppino (P395 Lunch; P595 Regular; P895 Abbondanza), a serving of al dente-cooked spaghetti tossed in a red wine and basil pesto sauce, and topped with mussels, clams, shrimps and calamari. I might be bias for liking it, but this dish has three of my most favorite food items -- pasta, tangy sauce, and tons of seafood.
I also got a bite off the Grilled Salmon Oregano (P550 Lunch; P795 Regular), a beautiful plate of perfectly grilled salmon fillet served with potato wedges and saut?ed vegetables on the side. Even if I prefer raw salmon, a la sashimi, I still enjoyed my forkful of the salmon fillet as I got to pick up the herby taste of this tender and moist grilled fish.
I also got to try a portion of the Seafood Risotto (P695), an ensemble of white wine-saut?ed shrimps, salmon and calamari simmered in a special seafood-flavored Arborio rice. Although I don't usually enjoy risotto dishes, I definitely dig this plate of goodness. The seafood pieces were cooked perfectly, while the risotto was oh-so-flavorful.

The Desserts and Drinks

A nice and filling Italian meal should always be capped off with some lovely sweet treats especially ones from The Bistro Group restaurants. So for the night, we had a serving of the New York Cheesecake (P450) and the new Red Velvet Cheesecake (P395).

I know the prices for these cakes are pretty steep. But believe me, these slices are tall and big that they can already satisfy a group of four. As for their taste, the New York Cheesecake served on a bed of strawberry amaretto sauce is creamy with just the right amount of sourness. It also has a soft and smooth consistency which I love. On the other hand, the Red Velvet Cheesecake has layers of cream cheese frosting, white chocolate cheesecake, and red velvet cake with semi-sweet chocolate chips. Although I dig the cream cheese and red velvet layers, the white chocolate was too sweet for my palate.
For my beverage, I ordered the new Ginger Watermelon Shake (P140), a refreshing concoction oozing with cooling ginger and sweet watermelon flavors. I also had a cup of Peppermint Tea (P95) to both cleanse the palate and to help with digestion.

THE VERDICT

Our visit to the newly-renovated Italianni's in Gateway has truly given us an experience of great food, great ambiance and great service. Every dish we got to try, both the new ones and the old favorites, were of excellent quality and nothing short of The Bistro Group standards. The cozy decorated space also provided for a relaxing venue to our 3-hour long dinner. And of course, how can I forget our servers who were very friendly, prompt and courteous. So in the end, even with quite a hefty price tag, Italianni's is definitely worth visiting when you want to indulge in deliziosi della cucina italiana.

The Good And The Bad Of Public And Private Rehab Centers

People who suffer from drug abuse have difficulty in deciding whether to seek treatment or not because of a variety of reasons. These may include problems or concerns on the kind of treatment they will get. Even if they have decided to seek treatment, the choice of whether to enter a government sponsored treatment facility over a private treatment center is still a big consideration. It is therefore important to discuss the different advantages and disadvantages of enrolling in a government treatment facility and a private treatment center.

Cost and Services

It is quite obvious that government sponsored treatment centers offer treatment services at a lower cost compared to private facilities. However, there are many private treatment centers that offer reasonable prices for rehab. Services provided by government rehab centers are the basics which include detox and counseling. Those who seek treatment in a government facility should not expect high end services and great physical amenities. Private centers on the other hand can provide a variety of extra activities to help patients in the treatment process. Private centers also have bigger space and well maintained spaces since they have the funds to support a significant number of employees.

Waiting Time

Due to the low cost of treatment in government rehab centers, there are many people who enroll in the program. The problem in this case is that all of them could not be accommodated in one time. Others will have to be put on a waiting until one patient has finished rehab and another one can take his place. Waiting can be difficult for many drug addicts who seek treatment. There have been a great number of cases where they can't stand waiting and no longer find interest in seeking treatment. Private institutions are an advantage when waiting time is considered. The number of patients enrolled matches the number of personnel hired. If cost is not a problem, seeking immediate treatment at a private center is indeed beneficial.

Staffing

Both government and private treatment centers hire qualified and professional personnel. Those who wish to enter a government sponsored facility can be assured of skilled practitioners helping them during the whole treatment process. One edge of government treatment centers is that patients are entitled to a refund if treatment is unsuccessful or questionable. Since it's a government facility, accountability of how the money is spent for treatment is very transparent. Those who seek treatment in private facilities can have the benefits of having more attendants and counselors in different activities because there are plenty of employees to assist doctors and other clinicians.

Samsung Galaxy Note II: what's changed?

Samsung Galaxy Note II what's changed

It's hard to believe that the word "phablet" has now been in our vocabulary for exactly a year. Perhaps even more difficult to believe is that it's still in our lexicon, but it doesn't look like the term is going anywhere anytime soon. Today, Samsung introduced the Galaxy Note II, a followup to the company's S-Pen equipped sleeper hit introduced at last year's IFA. But what does the sequel have that the original doesn't? Head below with us as we take a closer look at how the two devices compare.

Note: We'll continue filling out the chart as details surface.

Marlins rip Strasburg, shut out Nationals

By STEVEN WINE

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 9:52 p.m. ET Aug. 28, 2012

MIAMI (AP) - Pitching in air conditioning, Stephen Strasburg nonetheless soaked his jersey with perspiration after only a couple of innings.

The first-place Washington Nationals have reason to start sweating.

Strasburg gave up a career-high seven runs in five innings Tuesday night and the Nationals' losing streak reached five games when they were beaten by Ricky Nolasco and the last-place Miami Marlins 9-0.

"I'm sure there's not a pitcher in the history of baseball who has gone out there and done it every single time," Strasburg said. "I struggled for pretty much the whole game. It's a learning experience for me."

Nolasco (10-12) allowed five hits in his third career shutout and eighth complete game. The shutout was the first for the Marlins at their new ballpark.

The Nationals began the night with baseball's best record, but they're saddled with a losing streak that matches their season high.

"We've played really good 90 percent of the year," manager Davey Johnson said. "We're in a rough spot here. That makes the metal hotter. The tougher it gets, the stronger you get, so we'll be fine."

Strasburg (15-6) came into the game with a streak of 27 consecutive scoreless innings against Miami in five starts since last September. But he gave up a homer to his second batter, Justin Ruggiano, and trailed 5-0 by the third inning.

Strasburg shrugged off the significance of the drenched jersey, but Johnson said it was telling.

"He was fighting himself a little bit," the manager said. "He gave up more hits than he's used to giving up. ... He's such a perfectionist, when he gives up a hit he's going to be upset. That's part of the maturation process for a young pitcher."

Strasburg is expected to make perhaps four more starts before the Nationals shut him down for the year to protect his surgically repaired elbow. The drubbing doesn't change that plan, Johnson said.

Strasburg said the Marlins adjusted to his inside fastball and didn't try to hit the ball the other way.

"They had a little different approach this time, and I didn't make the adjustment," he said. "I just kept trying to do the same thing."

The young right-hander, who had won his past four starts, allowed five earned runs and gave up nine hits to match a career high. He struck out only three but leads the NL with 186 strikeouts.

Nolasco struck out five, walked none and lowered his ERA to 4.78. He retired 14 in a row and held the Nationals hitless until Kurt Suzuki singled with two outs in the fifth.

The complete game was his second in the past three starts.

"Anytime you're rolling like that, you want to finish it off," Nolasco said.

Ruggiano had a career-high four hits in four at-bats and drove in two runs, while Giancarlo Stanton added three hits and three RBIs. Seven of the Marlins' runs scored with two outs, and they totaled 13 hits.

Ian Desmond (hamstring) and Michael Morse (hand), both sidelined last weekend with injuries, returned to the Nationals' lineup but went hitless.

"The good news about that one," Johnson said, "is it was only 2 1/2 hours."

The Marlins scored twice off Strasburg in the first inning. Ruggiano hit his 13th home run. Carlos Lee doubled with two outs, then came home on a broken-bat single by Stanton.

Miami added three runs in the third. Bryan Petersen led off with a single, stole second, took third on a groundout and came home when second baseman Danny Espinosa mishandled a grounder for an error. Greg Dobbs' two-out single brought home two unearned runs to make it 5-0.

Ruggiano had a two-out RBI single against Strasburg in the fourth.

"He's the toughest I've faced in a game as far as overall stuff," Ruggiano said. "Hopefully he's tipping his cap to us, because I think we all had a good approach to him."

Donovan Solano drove in the final run against Strasburg, extending his hitting streak to 11 games with a two-out RBI single in the fifth that made it 7-0.

"Any team wants to come out and make a name for themselves off Stephen Strasburg," Desmond said. "The guy is one of the best pitchers in the game, and they're not just going to lay down for him."

NOTES: Nolasco had been 0-2 with a 6.35 ERA in his two previous starts this year against Washington. ... Jayson Werth went hitless and is 4 for 25 (.160) against Nolasco. ... The Marlins' bullpen hasn't allowed an earned run against Washington in the past 31 1-3 innings.

How Ann Romney learned to stop worrying and love politics

Ann and Mitt Romney in a visit to Poland, Warsaw in July. (Carsten Koall/Getty Images)

TAMPA--When the three major news networks announced last week that they would not air Ann Romney's Republican National Convention Monday night speech in Tampa, Republicans started scrambling. Romney's likeable wife of 43 years needed a primetime spot, they decided, and party leaders were reportedly ready to bump the popular Florida Sen. Marco Rubio to make that happen. Eventually, they moved New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez's appearance to another night so that Ann could steal the spotlight on Tuesday. Meanwhile, party officials denied they had ever considered dumping Rubio.

This last minute jockeying is a testament to just how vital the campaign considers Ann to her husband's election efforts, something that wasn't always the case over the course of Romney's political career. Back in 1994, during Romney's failed U.S. Senate bid (and first run for office), the new political spouse on the block was a gaffe-prone potential liability without the polish or PR skills to handle the press. But over the years, Ann has learned how to spin family tales into political catnip--wooing voters by offering a dimension to her husband that no one else has seen before?and becoming a smooth and competent politician in her own right.

The 63-year-old mother of five and grandmother to 18 has emerged as an important humanizing force for Romney on the campaign trail. While the presumptive Republican nominee can come across as stiff and awkward on the stump, Ann charms the crowd with personal stories, casting her husband in a softer light. At a rally in Michigan on Friday she choked up while expressing gratitude that so many supporters in her home state had shown up. "Mitt and I grew up here, we fell in love here, and this is a special place for us," she said.

[Slideshow: Ann Romney fashion]

Despite her ongoing struggle with multiple sclerosis, which she was diagnosed with in 1998, Ann has attended hundreds of campaign events and often comes across as having more energy on the stump than her husband. She was at her husband's side at virtually every rally during the long primary?working the rope line alongside her spouse and often delivering a mini stump speech of her own.

In one instance, she tells the story of being a stay-at-home mom in charge of five "very naughty" sons when her husband, then a consultant with Bain Capital, was traveling. "He would call home, and he'd hear a very exasperated wife at the end of the phone," Ann said during a rally in South Carolina in January. "And he'd remind me to hang in there. It would be okay, that actually my job was more important than his job. And the cool thing was he meant it."

"You couldn't pay me to do this again"

Ann now seems so skilled and smooth in interviews it's hard to believe that she is actually something of a comeback kid, politically speaking.

During her husband's unsuccessful bid for a Massachusetts Senate seat, the Boston Globe blasted her in a scorched-earth profile that portrayed her as a chatty, over-privileged woman living a life so perfect it bordered on creepy. The two lines from the interview that most haunted the campaign: Ann's insistence that she and her Ken-doll-looking husband had never once had a fight during their marriage; and her statement that the couple was "struggling" when Mitt was getting his graduate degrees at Harvard. The two were supporting themselves by selling off American Motors stock given to Mitt by his wealthy father?something that didn't exactly resonate with voters working two jobs to survive. ("Mitt was still in school and we had no income except the stock we were chipping away at. We were living on the edge, not entertaining. No, I did not work. Mitt thought it was important for me to stay home with the children, and I was delighted," she said at the time.)

In an article titled "Daughter of Privilege Knows Little of Real World," the Boston Herald ripped off the most unflattering of the Globe's quotes. The experience left Ann incredibly angry, she later admitted. When a reporter asked her after her husband's defeat whether she would ever help him launch another race, she retorted: "Never. You couldn't pay me to do this again."

Writer Ron Scott, a Mormon who wrote MITT ROMNEY: An Inside Look at the Man and His Politics and who lived in the same stake?sort of the Mormon version of a diocese?as the Romneys, said he remembers "gasping" when he first read the Globe profile, instantly recognizing it as a disaster. But now, Scott thinks the incident just shows how fully Romney trusted his wife?for good or for bad. Despite her political inexperience, her husband was willing to let Ann do an hour-long one-on-one interview without media training or a PR team to hold her hand. And Ann was happy to take that risk, confident she could come out on top.

Perhaps that assurance was misplaced at the time, but it seems fitting now.

"She looks...like she's enjoying the campaign," Scott said. "I think if you were to contrast between now and '94, I don't think she really enjoyed that campaign or the 2008 one, but this time around I think she really looks like she's come alive."

The happy homemaker

Romney often introduces Ann as his "sweetheart" on the trail. The two began dating when she was 16 and he 18 in the ritzy Detroit suburb of Bloomfield Hills. Ann's father, an immigrant from Wales, had made his fortune and served as the town's mayor. Romney, the son of Michigan Gov. George Romney, "hotly pursued" her, she said later. After a year at Stanford and two years of a Mormon mission in France, Romney rushed home and proposed to Ann, who had converted to Mormonism under Gov. Romney's tutelage and was attending Brigham Young University in Utah.

Ann eventually finished her undergraduate degree in French in 1975, when she already had two children. She recalled in an interview with People magazine that she shocked a professor at Harvard's extension school--where she took some classes at night while Mitt attended grad school--for needing to nurse one of her children in the back of the lecture hall. "It's one of those things where the professor is like, 'Wait, wait, wait, this is liberal Harvard, but what am I going to do about that woman in the back with a baby that's nursing?' He just kept pretending like I wasn't there," she recalled. Though she saw the Beatles perform live in Detroit and was a child of the 60s, Ann was a bit of rebel in reverse for wanting to settle down and have children instead of pursuing a career. She's said she felt judged sometimes by peers, but never regretted her decision.

During the campaign in April, she used a Democratic strategist's attack on her for never "working a day in her life" to portray Democrats as judgmental and dismissive of mothers, a powerful counterattack to the Democratic argument that Republicans were waging a "war on women." The comments sent Democrats into a tailspin, with no less than President Barack Obama himself going on TV to say, "There's no tougher job than being a mom" within a day of the comments. Ann later called the attack "an early birthday gift" in comments that were captured by a hot mic, inadvertently showing off her tough-as-nails political instincts.

Team Romney

When speaking about Romney's bid, Ann frequently uses the "we" or the "Mitt and I" construction, emphasizing just how invested in the campaign she actually is. She's not just selling Mitt on the stump--she's selling them both as a team.

"Mitt and I are in an unusual position right now to make a difference to the future of this nation," she told a rally in West Charleston, S.C., in January.

Then, two weeks ago, she said to NBC: "I don't think he could do it without me. I don't believe he could."

Her willingness to take on the mantle of surrogate is somewhat surprising for a woman who has often aired her misgivings about opening up her private life and whom the Boston Globe described as largely "invisible" in Massachusetts as first lady when her husband was governor. Even now, when traveling on her own, Ann rarely tells people she meets on planes her true identity; she prefers to say vaguely that she works in public relations.

Technically, she's not lying. During the primaries, when Romney had a tense relationship with his traveling press corps, Ann would venture back on the candidate's plane to chat with reporters?offering up a friendlier face to the pack of wolves press than her hunted husband.

After a disastrous event in South Carolina when Romney was photographed with one of the smallest crowds he's ever attracted on the trail, Ann wandered off the bus and stood with reporters awaiting a gaggle with the candidate.

"What kind of jeans are you wearing?" she jokingly shouted, as her husband took the mic?a reference to a brief media obsession over whether the candidate was sporting "skinny" jeans on the campaign trail. Her husband grinned.

On the campaign plane, Ann always shares a row with her husband. He reads his iPad, while she's been spotted flipping through issues of US Weekly. He has said her presence keeps him calm. "If I'm away from Ann for longer than a week or so, I get off course," Romney told CNN's Piers Morgan. "She has to bring me back and moderate me down a bit."

But Ann's sunny disposition has faltered as negative attacks on her family's wealth and character intensified over the summer. While she's continued to be one of her husband's strongest assets on the stage, Ann has largely ceased her plane-side chats with reporters trailing her husband across the country.

Advisers who declined to be named discussing the candidate's wife said Ann was deeply wounded by the British tabloid attacks in July over her husband's comments suggesting he found London's Olympic preparations "disconcerting." (The Sun tabloid called him "Mitt the Twit" in retaliation, and the gaffe threatened to overshadow Romney's foreign tour.)

More recently, her hackles have been up over demands that her husband release more years of his tax returns. Ann was noticeably agitated in an interview with NBC's Natalie Morales two weeks ago when asked about the financial disclosures.

"Have you seen how we are attacked? Have you seen what's happened?" she said, leaning forward in her chair. "We have been very transparent to what's legally required of us. But the more we release, the more we get attacked, the more we get questioned, the more we get pushed. And so we have done what's legally required, and there's going to be no more tax releases given."

Besides fighting back in interviews, Ann has grown more aggressive on the stump as well. The announcement of Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wisc) as Romney's running mate has breathed new life into the campaign, drawing larger crowds to Romney's events. Joining her husband and Ryan on stage at a rally in Mooresville, N.C., earlier this month, she marveled at the size of the crowd that had turned out, which was estimated to be at least 4,000 people.

"They know America is in trouble and these are the guys who are going to save it," she said. "It's a boost that gives us determination to say we're not going to take it anymore! We're going to take the White House back!"

--Holly Bailey contributed to this report from the campaign trail.

Correction: An earlier version of this story said the Romneys have 16 grandchildren. They have 18.

As solitary animals, giant pandas have developed a number of ways to communicate those times when they are ready to come into close contact. One means of this communication occurs through scent marking. A recent study by San Diego Zoo Global researchers, collaborating with researchers at the Institute of Zoology, Chinese Academy of Science, indicates that pandas make clear and specific choices about what trees are used for scent marking.

"Variables affecting the selection of scent-marking sites included bark roughnesss, presence of moss on the tree trunk, tree diameter and distance to the trail," said Ron Swaisgood, Ph.D., co-head of San Diego Zoo Global's Giant Panda Conservation Unit. "These choices have clear effects on the scent signal, making it last longer, be detected from further away, or otherwise enhance its communication efficiency. We are not surprised that pandas are efficient with their use of chemo-signals, as mounting evidence suggests that many aspects of giant panda life history are constrained by their energetically poor diet."

This study, which was recently published in "Animal Behavior," confirms that old-growth forest and other factors like tree type are important for maintaining habitat that will support giant panda conservation.

Commercial Real Estate Recovering at a Slower Pace | RISMedia

Positive underlying fundamentals continue to support all of the major commercial real estate sectors, but a slowdown in job creation and ongoing tight loan availability has tempered growth in some areas, according to the National Association of REALTORS? quarterly commercial real estate forecast.

Lawrence Yun, NAR chief economist, notes there are mixed results among the commercial sectors. ?Job creation in the second quarter was about half of what we saw in the first quarter, which is moderating demand in the office sector,? he says. ?Industrial and warehouse space is holding on better because imports and exports have advanced. While exports to Europe generally are down, trade has been robust with India, China and other Asian nations, along with Brazil, Mexico and our strongest trading partner ? Canada.?

Although still positive, dampened demand is slightly moderating rent growth with the exception of the multifamily market. ?Sharply higher demand for apartments is causing rents to rise at faster rates,? Yun says. ?A return to normal household formation will mean even lower vacancy rates and higher rents in the future.?

The current commercial real estate cycle has been driven by shifts in demand without an oversupply of new construction. ?The difficulty small businesses have in getting commercial real estate loans for leasing or purchase is keeping a lid on demand,? Yun explains. ?Multifamily is the only commercial sector with a notable growth in new space, with some lending provided through government loans.?

With the exception of multifamily, vacancy rates remain above historic averages seen since 1999. Over that timeframe the typical vacancy rate has been 14.4 percent for the office market, 10.1 percent in industrial, 8.1 percent for retail and 5.8 percent in multifamily.

Vacancy rates are marginally declining and rents are modestly rising in all of the sectors, but significant changes in the outlook are unlikely before the end of the year. Many corporate decisions on spending and job hiring are on hold given uncertainty over the upcoming elections, whether Congress will effectively avoid a ?fiscal cliff,? and unsettled issues such as health care and banking/financial regulations.

?Overall companies hold plentiful cash reserves, but they are hesitant to hire without clarity over how these outstanding issues will impact the bottom line,? Yun says.

?Commercial real estate gains could be thwarted if lending from small and community banks dry up from excessive regulatory compliance costs, and if international big-bank capital rules are applied to smaller lending institutions,? Yun adds.

NAR?s latest Commercial Real Estate Outlook offers projections for four major commercial sectors and analyzes quarterly data in the office, industrial, retail and multifamily markets. Historic data for metro areas were provided by REIS, Inc., a source of commercial real estate performance information.

Office Markets

Vacancy rates in the office sector are expected to fall from an estimated 16.1 percent in the third quarter to 15.6 percent in the third quarter of 2013.

The markets with the lowest office vacancy rates presently are Washington, D.C., with a vacancy rate of 9.4 percent; New York City, at 10.0 percent; and New Orleans, 12.8 percent.

Office rent is projected to increase 2.0 percent this year and 2.6 percent in 2013. Net absorption of office space in the U.S., which includes the leasing of new space coming on the market as well as space in existing properties, should be 24.1 million square feet in 2012 and 47.8 million next year.

Industrial Markets

Industrial vacancy rates are forecast to decline from 10.7 percent in the third quarter of this year to 10.5 percent in the third quarter of 2013.

The areas with the lowest industrial vacancy rates currently are Orange County, Calif., with a vacancy rate of 4.6 percent; Los Angeles, 4.8 percent; and Miami at 6.8 percent.

Annual industrial rent is likely to rise 1.7 percent in 2012 and 2.4 percent next year. Net absorption of industrial space nationally is seen at 59.8 million square feet this year and 67.2 million in 2013.

Retail Markets

Retail vacancy rates are projected to decline from 10.9 percent in the third quarter to 10.7 percent in the third quarter of 2013.

Presently, markets with the lowest retail vacancy rates include San Francisco, 3.8 percent; Fairfield County, Conn., 3.9 percent; and Long Island, N.Y., and Orange County, Calif., both at 5.3 percent.

Average retail rent is forecast to rise 0.8 percent this year and 1.3 percent in 2013. Net absorption of retail space should be 10.3 million square feet this year and 20.1 million in 2013.

Multifamily Markets

The apartment rental market ? multifamily housing ? is expected to see vacancy rates drop from 4.3 percent in the third quarter to 4.2 percent in the third quarter of 2013; vacancy rates below 5 percent generally are considered a landlord?s market with demand justifying higher rents.

Areas with the lowest multifamily vacancy rates currently are Portland, Ore., at 2.0 percent; New York City and Minneapolis, both at 2.2 percent; and New Haven, Conn., and San Jose, Calif., both at 2.4 percent.

Average apartment rent is likely to increase 4.1 percent in 2012 and another 4.4 percent next year. Multifamily net absorption should be 219,300 units this year and 236,600 in 2013.

The Commercial Real Estate Outlook is published by the NAR Research Division for the commercial community. NAR?s Commercial Division, formed in 1990, provides targeted products and services to meet the needs of the commercial market and constituency within NAR.

The NAR commercial components include commercial members; commercial committees, subcommittees and forums; commercial real estate boards and structures; and the NAR commercial affiliate organizations ? CCIM Institute, Institute of Real Estate Management, Realtors? Land Institute, Society of Industrial and Office Realtors?, and Counselors of Real Estate.

Approximately 78,000 NAR and institute affiliate members specialize in commercial brokerage and related services, and an additional 232,000 members offer commercial real estate services as a secondary business.

The Best Search Engine Optimization Tips Online | Internet ...

The competition is fierce for website visitors. Search engine optimization can be your best option to attract more viewers. People all over the world rely on search engines to help them locate information, find products, and learn about different brands. Follow the tactical advice below, and watch the traffic to your site start growing.

To optimize your place on search engine results, include a myriad of keywords, including misspellings of keywords, in the ?metatag? area of your website setup. Search engine bots will be able to ?read? the metatags and improve your sites search engine rankings. As an example, if your website is about drinking glasses, be sure your metatag includes ?drinking,? ?glasses,? ?drinkingglasses,? etc.

It is unwise to use duplicate content on your site, because it will result in a lower search ranking on Google. Instead, think of something new to write about to attract a different audience.

Try to make each page on your site different from the others. Pay particular attention to the titles you use. Titles are very important when it comes to SEO. If you want your web site to appear in the first pages of results, use keywords in your titles.

Leaving posts on blogs that are compatible to yours may allow you to link through to their site. Most blog owners allow you to include a link if you reciprocate and leave relevant and substantial comments. You should avoid blogs on subjects and products that are not related to your site. When you do leave comments, make sure they are helpful to the blog owners. Being educated in your subject matter means your comments, including your links, will be accepted on a number of blogs.

Websites with meaningful content often rank higher than those that just sell products and services. Post relevant articles about the products you sell. Include tips on the use of the products. Post customer reviews of your product also.

What you put in your title tags is important. For the best results, make use of your chosen keywords. So that everything is linked together, include the title tag on all of your site?s pages. Use your company name, if you have one, near the end of your title link. Remember that people are not likely to search for your specific company name unless your name is well known and famous.

Ask them about their experience in the business. To make an educated choice, you need to be aware of all risks and potential downsides that may be involved.

Make sure every page of your site is tightly focused around both your primary keywords and your niche. Constantly update your website with relevant content that is packed with keywords. Use your keywords in your image captions, URL, links and other relevant areas. The more places you can find to use your keywords, the more frequently your website is going to appear on search result pages.

Try entering the podcast world. Podcasts can be both video and audio, and they are often streamed live with relevant information for their audience. Podcasts are popular, and a lot of people are doing this. All you need is a video camera. Be sure to include a description of your podcast so the search engines can index it.

Refrain from creating a page that has nothing on it except links. Blend them in with the other content on your page. Pages that are filled with links are often ignored by readers who often find them boring. Many search engines do not rank these pages favorably. Use content that is relevant to your site and only use links that are relevant to that content. This will show search engines that your pages are credible.

Add meta descriptions to each page on your site to improve your search engine placement. A good description tag will make your site stand out on the search engine results page. Keep your meta tag short and to the point. A cleverly worded meta tag should get more traffic to your site even if it happens to be ranked lower in the search engines.

High quality, unique content is one of the best ways to boost your search engine rankings. To attract traffic, you need to provide information that is different from that on other sites and other Web pages. You will retain more visitors when your content is interesting and unique.

Successfully optimizing your site for search engines may seem intimidating, but as this article has shown you, it doesn?t have to be difficult. Knowing the few basic principles that determine how the search engines work, can help you tweak your site to attract more visitors than ever. Before you know it, you?ll have a slew of new

Search Engine Optimization, SEO

Women with acute heart failure have similar in-hospital mortality to men but are less treated

ScienceDaily (Aug. 26, 2012) ? Women with acute heart failure have similar in-hospital mortality to men but are less treated in the real world, according to results from the global ALARM-HF registry presented August 26 at the ESC Congress 2012. The findings were presented by Dr John T. Parissis from Greece.

Acute heart failure (AHF) is a frequent clinical situation with high short- and long-term mortality as well as high hospitalization rates. The Acute Heart Failure Global Registry of Standard Treatment (ALARM-HF) is an in-hospital chart audit survey which includes patients hospitalized for AHF in Europe, Latin America and Australia. A total of 4,953 patients admitted to Cardiology Departments (67%) or Intensive Care Units (33%) for AHF in 666 hospitals among 9 countries (France, Germany, Italy, Spain, UK, Greece, Turkey, Mexico and Australia) were enrolled. Women accounted for 37% of the study population.

The present study is a sub-analysis of ALARM-HF, targeted to explore gender-related differences in patients hospitalized for AHF. The researchers found significant differences between women and men in clinical presentation, co-morbidities, precipitating factors and treatment patterns. Length of stay and in-hospital mortality were similar in women and men.

Compared to men, women presented with AHF at an older age and with higher rates of de novo heart failure. Based on AHF classification, women were less than half as likely to present with cardiogenic shock than men, but more than twice as likely to present with right heart failure.

Women presented on admission to hospital with higher systolic blood pressure and higher heart rate. Women had higher left ventricular ejection fraction and the majority of women had preserved ejection fraction.

Regarding co-morbidities, when compared to men, women more frequently had atrial fibrillation, valvular heart disease, diabetes mellitus, obesity, anemia and depression. But women had lower rates of cardiomyopathy, coronary artery disease (CAD), dyslipidemia, smoking and asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) than men. There were similar rates of arterial hypertension and peripheral vascular disease in both genders.

In both genders, acute coronary syndrome (ACS) was the most common precipitating factor for AHF. However, women were less likely than men to have ACS and more likely to have infection or worsening valvular heart disease.

On admission, a lower percentage of females were on angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs), beta-blockers, aspirin and clopidogrel due to the presence of underlying co-morbidities and less CAD. However, more females were on digitalis and vitamin K antagonists due to the higher incidence of atrial fibrillation.

Regarding interventions, continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) and mechanical ventilation were equally offered to females and males. Fewer females underwent percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery and were supported by intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP).

Despite the improvement of medical management at discharge, the aforementioned differences in pharmaceutical therapies (especially in beta-blockers) remained in favour of males.

Mean length of stay in a coronary or intensive care unit (CCU/ICU) was similar between genders. Importantly, the overall in-hospital mortality and the in-CCU/ICU mortality were also similar in females and males. "The presence of higher ejection fraction and less CAD in women may positively affect survival in women," said Dr Parissis, who is assistant professor of cardiology at the University of Athens in Greece and a member of the ALARM-HF Steering Committee. "On the other hand, the existence of other serious co-morbidities and under-prescription of life saving medications such as beta-blockers may counteract this positive effect on their in-hospital survival. This point may explain the similar mortality rate between genders."

"The presence of diverse predictors and pharmaceutical modalities may explain the similar in-hospital mortality rates in both genders," he added. "Perhaps there are differences in the pathophysiology of AHF between women and men which should be taken into account in order to achieve gender-tailored management. Finally, a more intensive implementation of heart failure guidelines is required to optimize life saving medications especially in women."
