Egypt's contentious Islamist constitution becomes law

CAIRO (Reuters) - Egyptian President Mohamed Mursi signed into law a new constitution shaped by his Islamist allies, a bitterly contested document which he insists will help to end political turmoil and allow him to focus on fixing the economy.

Anxiety about a deepening political and economic crisis has gripped Egypt in past weeks, with many people rushing to buy dollars and withdraw their savings from banks. The government has imposed new restrictions to reduce capital flight.

The new constitution, which the liberal opposition says betrays Egypt's 2011 revolution by dangerously mixing religion and politics, has polarized the Arab world's most populous nation and prompted occasionally violent protest on the streets.

The presidency said on Wednesday that Mursi had formally approved the constitution the previous evening, shortly after results showed that Egyptians had backed it in a referendum.

The text won about 64 percent of the vote, paving the way for a new parliamentary election in about two months.

The charter states that the principles of sharia, Islamic law, are the main source of legislation and that Islamic authorities will be consulted on sharia - a source of concern to the Christian minority and others.

The referendum result marked yet another electoral victory for the Islamists since veteran autocrat Hosni Mubarak was toppled in 2011, following parliamentary elections last year and the presidential vote that brought Mursi to power this year.

Mursi's government, which has accused opponents of damaging the economy by prolonging political upheaval, now faces the tough task of building a broad consensus as it prepares to impose austerity measures.

The Egyptian pound came under renewed pressure on Wednesday as market players, worried about the economy, switched their funds into U.S. dollars and other currencies, traders said.

Keen to be seen as decisive, the government is now in talks with business figures, trade unions and other groups to highlight the need for tax increases to resolve the crisis.

Mursi has committed to such austerity measures to receive a $4.8 billion loan from the International Monetary Fund.

However, Al-Mal newspaper quoted Planning Minister Ashraf al-Araby as saying the government would not implement the tax increases until it had completed the dialogue with different parts of society.

In Cairo's bustling centre, people openly expressed their frustration with economic instability as they went about their daily business.

"The country's going to the pits. Everything is a mess," Hamdy Hussein, a 61-year-old building janitor, said angrily. "It's worse than ever. Mubarak was better than now. People were living and there was security."

Ashraf Mohamed Kamal, 30, added: "The economic situation will be a mess in the next few years. It already is. People will get hungrier. People are now begging more."

TURMOIL CONTINUES

Mursi, catapulted into power by his Islamist allies this year, believes adopting the constitution quickly and holding the vote for a permanent new parliament will help to end the long period of turmoil and uncertainty that has wrecked the economy.

Mursi's government argues the constitution offers enough protection to all groups, and that many Egyptians are fed up with street protests that have prevented a return to normality and distracted the government from tackling the economy.

The charter gives Egypt's upper house of parliament, which is dominated by Islamists, full legislative powers until the vote for a new lower house is held.

While stressing the importance of political stability to heal the economy, Mursi's government has tried to play down the economic problems and appealed for unity despite the hardship.

"The government calls on the people not to worry about the country's economy," Parliamentary Affairs Minister Mohamed Mahsoub told the upper house in a speech. "We are not facing an economic problem but a political one and it is affecting the economic situation. We therefore urge all groups, opponents and brothers, to achieve wide reconciliation and consensus."

Mursi is due to address the upper house on Saturday in a speech likely to be dominated by economic policy.

Sharpening people's concerns, the authorities imposed currency controls on Tuesday to prevent capital flight. Leaving or entering Egypt with more than $10,000 in cash is now banned.

Adding to the government's long list of worries, Communications Minister Hany Mahmoud has resigned citing his "inability to adapt to the government's working culture".

The opposition has condemned the new basic law as too Islamist, saying it could allow clerics to intervene in the lawmaking process and leave minority groups without proper legal protection. It said this month's vote was marred by major violations.

Nevertheless, major opposition groups have not called for new protests, suggesting that weeks of civil unrest over the constitution may be subsiding now that it has passed.

The United States, which provides $1.3 billion a year in military aid plus other support to Egypt and sees it as a pillar of security in the Middle East, called on Egyptian politicians to bridge divisions and on all sides to reject violence.

Kazakh military plane crashes, all 27 on board killed

ALMATY (Reuters) - A military transport plane crashed in southern Kazakhstan on Tuesday, killing all 27 people on board, including the commander of the Central Asian nation's border guards, local media and the KNB security service said.

The twin-engine Antonov An-72 jet disappeared from radar screens at about 1900 local time (1300 GMT) as it was making a descent near the city of Shymkent, the capital of the South Kazakhstan Region.

Kazakhstan's Channel 7 television showed early footage of charred and mangled fragments of the airplane scattered around a cordoned off area in a raging blizzard.

Kazakhstan's KNB security service said the plane, bound for Shymkent from the capital Astana, belonged to its border troops.

The commander of the country's border guards, Turganbek Stambekov, was among those on board, it said on its site (www.knb.kz). The plane was carrying a crew of seven as well as 20 servicemen.

The passengers also included senior border guard officers from southern Kazakhstan. The border guards had been due to make a stopover in Shymkent and then fly to the Uzbek capital Tashkent for talks with Uzbek colleagues, local media said.

The plane plunged to the ground in bad weather from an altitude of about 800 meters as it was making a fourth circle, trying to land, Kazakh television channels said.

KTK channel broadcast footage of an eyewitness saying he had heard a loud explosion and had seen flames at the crash site.

Quoting Kazakh air traffic controllers, Channel 7 said the plane had crashed into an open-cast mine some 21 km (13 miles) from Shymkent, and rescue teams could not immediately reach the crash site.

North Korea missiles could reach US, says South

South Korean navy ships have found what appeared to be debris from the rocket launched by North Korea this week. NBCNews.com's Alex Witt reports.

By Reuters

SEOUL - This month's rocket launch by reclusive North Korea shows it has likely developed the technology to fire a warhead more than 6,200 miles, South Korean officials said on Sunday - putting the U.S. West Coast in range.

North Korea said the December 12 launch put a weather satellite in orbit but critics say it was aimed at nurturing the kind of technology needed to mount a nuclear warhead on a long-range missile.

North Korea is banned from testing missile or nuclear technology under U.N. sanctions imposed after its 2006 and 2009 nuclear weapons tests and the U.N. Security Council condemned the launch.

North Korea: Detained American tourist has 'admitted his crime'

South Korea retrieved and analyzed parts of the first-stage rocket that dropped in the waters off its west coast

"As a result of analyzing the material of Unha-3 (North Korea's rocket), we judged North Korea had secured a range of more than 10,000 km in case the warhead is 500-600 kg," a South Korean Defense Ministry official told a news briefing.

North Korea's previous missile tests ended in failure.

North Korea, which denounces the United States as the mother of all warmongers on an almost daily basis, has spent decades and scarce resources to try to develop technology capable of striking targets as far away as the United States and it is also working to build a nuclear arsenal.

In this 2011 file photo, a girl plays the piano inside the Changgwang Elementary School in Pyongyang, North Korea.

But experts believe the North is still years away from mastering the technology needed to miniaturize a nuclear bomb to mount on a missile.

South Korean defense officials also said there was no confirmation whether the North had the re-entry technology needed for a payload to survive the heat and vibration without disintegrating.

Despite international condemnation, the launch this month was seen as a major boost domestically to the credibility of the North's young leader, Kim Jong-un, who took over power from his father who died last year.

Apparently encouraged by the euphoria, the fledgling supreme leader called for the development and launching of "a variety of more working satellites" and "carrier rockets of bigger capacity" at a banquet in Pyongyang on Friday which he hosted for those who contributed to the lift-off, according to North Korean state media.?

Nadurra Alvaro tipped for success in BAGS Track Championship Final Standard Div B

Nadurra Alvaro is going to pose a serious threat to his opponents in the BAGS Track Championship Final Standard Div B at Perry Barr in Ireland on Sunday, December 23, 2012. He has managed to win quite a few events since making his debut in the sport, so it will not be easy for his rivals to stop him from finishing on top of the table in the Grade IR encounter.

Most of the greyhounds have not been in dominant form, which will make things quite interesting in tomorrow?s race. Therefore, the spectators will be eagerly awaiting the start of action at 15:44 GMT.

A cash prize of ?500 has been set for the victorious greyhound, so everyone will push extremely hard in the race. They will have to come out with clever strategy, as the overall distance to cover is 480 metres.

This means that both the speed and stamina will be important and the starting positions will also make a slight difference at the end of the day.

Looking at that, Garryvoe George might attract some bets in his favour, as he is going to enter the competition from trap number six. He will get a solid chance of attacking his rivals, but there is a risk involved in that, as he might run out of gas earlier than expected.

Therefore, the S. Cahill?s trained dog will need to be careful and should not get carried away. He is not carrying a decent momentum right now, which will dent his confidence to some extent.

However, he has participated in a lot of races until now, so he should not feel a lot of pressure. He managed to deliver a strong result in his penultimate run, where he was priced as the favourite to succeed.

Despite that, he could only manage the runner up spot, but his team would have been content with that in the end.

Compared to him, Nadurra Alvaro will be in a much better shape, as his performances have been consistent. He appeared in a trial event at Perry Barr recently and did not have any issues with the racecourse.

However, it will be a different game altogether for him to compete at the highest level against some fierce challengers.

European rocket launches foreign satellites

Europe?s Ariane 5 ECA heavy-lift rocket on Wednesday successfully launched telecommunications satellites for use by the British and Mexican governments in the rocket?s seventh and final campaign for 2012.

It was the 53rd consecutive success for Ariane 5, which has now gone 10 years without a failure.

The operators of the two satellites ? the British Skynet 5D and the Mexsat Bicentenario ? reported that both were sending signals and healthy in geostationary transfer orbit after separating from the Ariane 5 ECA upper stage.

The launch enabled the Evry, France-based Arianespace launch consortium to meet its goal of conducting 10 flights in 2012 ? seven Ariane 5s, two Europeanized Soyuz vehicles and the inaugural flight of Europe?s Vega small-satellite launcher ? from Europe?s Guiana Space Center spaceport on the northeast coast of South America.

Arianespace and European government officials hope that spreading the fixed spaceport costs over three vehicles in the coming years, coupled with upgrades expected for both Ariane 5 and Vega, will enable Arianespace to eke out a profit with a diminishing amount of annual government operating-cost support payments. [ Photos: Amazing Night Launch of Ariane 5 ]

Ariane 5 ECA?s inability to generate a steady profit despite its decade of success and the fact that its direct competitors in the global commercial market have struggled in the past couple of years speaks volumes about the market?s business model, European government and industry officials say.

The Wednesday launch carried satellites ordered by commercial companies acting on behalf of government customers.

The Skynet 5D, built by Astrium Satellites under a contract with sister company Astrium Services, will be tested in orbit at 25 degrees east before moving to its operating slot at 53 degrees east in geostationary orbit.

The 4,800-kilogram Skynet 5D is the fourth, and likely the last, Skynet 5 satellite ordered under a 20-year partnership between the British Defense Ministry and Astrium Services. The contract runs to 2022, after which the ownership of the Skynet satellites will transfer to the British government, which will then likely organize a fresh competition for satellite services.

Astrium Services provides Skynet bandwidth to NATO and individual NATO governments in addition to its guaranteed service to British defense forces.

Riding in the lower position on the Ariane 5 ECA rocket was the Mexsat Bicentenario satellite, which will be used by the Mexican government to provide fixed telecommunications and Internet services to Mexican communications that are not attached to the country?s communications grid.

The 3,000-kilogram Mexsat, carrying eight Ku- and eight C-band transponders, was built by Orbital Sciences Corp. of Dulles, Va., under contract to Boeing Space and Intelligence Systems of El Segundo, Calif.

The Mexican government in 2010 selected Boeing to provide the three-satellite Mexsat system under a $1 billion contract that includes two large Boeing-built mobile communications satellites, set for launch in 2013 and 2014, and the smaller Bicentenario spacecraft.

The U.S. Export-Import Bank provided $922 million in loans to support the financing of the three satellites? construction by the two U.S. manufacturers.

Gerardo Ruiz Esparza, Mexico?s secretary of communications and transport, which manages the Mexsat program, said the total Mexsat budget is around $1.6 billion. He said after the launch that the Mexican government is committed to delivering Internet access to all its citizens, and that Mexsat is central to that effort.

U.S. sees "coordinated" foreign strategy to acquire U.S. technology

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. intelligence community is warning that "one or more foreign governments" appear to have a "coordinated strategy" to acquire valuable American technology by buying U.S. firms, a U.S. government body said in an annual report.

The finding was mentioned in the public version of an annual report to Congress by the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States, an interagency body that reviews foreign investment for potential national security concerns.

One investment now before the committee is Chinese state-owned CNOOC's purchase of Canadian energy producer Nexen Inc. Ottawa has approved the deal, but CFIUS is reviewing whether to allow CNOOC to acquire Nexen's oilfields in the Gulf of Mexico.

The report, issued on Thursday, said the U.S. intelligence community "judges with moderate confidence that there is likely a coordinated strategy among one or more foreign governments or companies to acquire U.S. companies involved in research, development, or production of critical technologies for which the United States is a leading producer."

The public version did not identify any particular country but said information supporting the intelligence community's assessment was provided in the classified version of the report that was sent to Congress.

U.S. government officials have publicly complained about Chinese government policies that pressure American companies to transfer valuable technologies to do business in China.

That issue was on the agenda for high-level U.S.-China talks this week in Washington, with the United States welcoming a new Chinese pledge not to make technology transfer a condition for market access.

The U.S. business community has also complained about growing theft of U.S. trade secrets by Chinese companies, often by means of sophisticated cyberattacks.

The United States and China also agreed this week to hold technical talks next year on cybersecurity.

Last month, the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission urged Congress to conduct an in-depth assessment of Chinese cyberspying and consider imposing tougher penalties on companies that benefit from industrial espionage.

The advisory panel, created by the U.S. Congress, also urged tougher U.S. scrutiny of all Chinese investment by state-owned enterprises.

"China is engaged in a state-directed coordinated strategy to acquire critical U.S. assets important to our economic and national security," commission member Michael Wessel told Reuters on Friday, saying he was reflecting his own views.

"Just in the last few weeks, we have seen an accelerated buying spree by Chinese companies with ties to the state," Wessel said, referring to a bid by BGI-Shenzhen to buy U.S. life sciences company Complete Genomics and investments made by Chinese petroleum company Sinopec in Wyoming.

Forex News: Euro Partially Erases Loses ... - Forex Trading Hot

Following the cancellation of the US House of Representatives vote on ?Plan B?, which would have raised taxes on some wealthy Americans, fiscal cliff worries have grown and a risk aversion can be seen across markets in today?s trading.

However, following a sudden drop to 1.3190, the Euro has managed to reverse about half of the early session sixty point loss against the US Dollar. The only piece of news that might have been responsible for the Euro uptick were the comments from EC Vice President Olli Rehn. Rehn said that further French Budget cuts aren?t essential, according to Le Monde. Euro climbed to 1.3230 following the comments.

Also in France, PM Hollande said unemployment will continue to rise, but there is no recession. French consumer confidence was reported at 89.0 in December, up from November?s 88.0 consumer confidence.

In Germany, consumer confidence dropped to a yearly low of 5.6. The German Finance Ministry reported today in a monthly report that it expects a rebound after the first quarter of next year, and that figures show an unfavorable start to Q4. Neither release had significant effect on currency trading.

In the UK, economic growth in Q3 was revised lower in a final estimate and public debt for November was higher than expected. However, the Sterling did not sustain any losses, possibly because of an unwinding of declines that followed the overnight US news.

Euro is currently trading slightly above 1.3200 in currency markets. The pair might next see resistance by an 8-month high set at 1.3308, and support could be provided by the former resistance around 1.3158.

'Friday Night Lights' coach calling it quits

LUBBOCK, Texas ? Gary Gaines, the 63-year-old high school coach at the center of the ?Friday Night Lights? book and film, has left the Odessa Permian sideline for the last time.

Gaines said he resigned from the West Texas football program he helped make famous. He said he doubts he?ll coach again but wasn?t sure what?s next for him.

?We?re going to give it to someone else and, hopefully, they can make more out of it than we did,? Gaines said. ?We came here to make some deep playoff runs and we weren?t able to do that. That?s what (Permian fans) expect, and I expect as well.?

He leaves with a 69-28-1 record in eight years as Permian?s head coach, including a 23-21 mark in his last four years. In all, he coached Permian from 1986-89 and 2009-12, and was an assistant there for three years in the early 1980s.

His second stint in Odessa included a lone playoff victory and no district championships.

Gaines led the program to a state 5A championship in 1989. The Panthers were undefeated that season, just a year after H.G. ?Buzz? Bissinger spent a year in town researching his best-seller, which chronicled how high school football binds an oil patch community.

Todd Veseley, athletic director of the Ector school district, said it would be a ?daunting? task to replace Gaines. He declined to say whether he asked Gaines to step down following the Panthers? disappointing 5-6 season.

?Any time anyone the quality of coach Gaines leaves, it leaves a vacuum,? he said.

Gaines would not say directly whether he was asked to resign.

?It was just one of those things,? he said. ?I understand when programs don?t improve sometimes the head coach has to bear that responsibility.?

Made into a movie in 2004, Bissinger?s book was a hit everywhere but Odessa. Locals felt Bissinger betrayed their hospitality by writing about the sociological woes surrounding the team and town, including allegations of racism and a win-at-all-costs mentality. An NBC television series with the same name was less about football than the community depicted.

After leading the Panthers to the state title more than 20 years ago, Gaines left Permian to become linebackers coach at Texas Tech. He left coaching in 2005 after five years at Abilene Christian to return to Odessa as the school district?s athletic director.

Two years later, he moved north to take a similar post in Lubbock.

The once-vaunted Panthers have won six state titles but none since 1991.

Before Gaines? return in 2009, the Permian program enjoyed something of a revival, making it to three regional finals the previous four seasons while compiling a 38-11 record under Darren Allman, a former Permian player and Gaines protege who left in 2009 to take the coaching job at Austin Westlake.

91% Lincoln

All Critics (181) | Top Critics (43) | Fresh (164) | Rotten (17)

It's the most remarkable movie Steven Spielberg has made in quite a spell, and one of the things that makes it remarkable is how it fulfills those expectations by simultaneously ignoring and transcending them.

Lincoln paints a powerful and compelling portrait of the man who has become an icon. We don't need to see more of his life to understand how rare a figure he was - this window is more than sufficient.

Lincoln offers proof of what magic can happen when an actor falls in love with his character. Because as great as Day-Lewis has been in his many parts, he has never seemed quite so smitten.

The film masterfully captures the dual dilemmas facing the president in the final months of his life: how to bring the war between the states to an end, and how to eradicate slavery, once and for all.

Lincoln is a stirring reminder that politics can be noble. Might there be a lesson here for today's shrill D.C. discourse? 'Tis a consummation devoutly to be wished.

Day-Lewis' voice is thin and reedy, which jibes with historical accounts but subverts our expectations. His attitude makes listeners lean in, and so do we, magnetized by his kindly reserve.

This is an almost religiously revered president portrayed as he's never been portrayed on screen before, a tale told with grace and sophistication. If only for this fact alone, Lincoln is a work deserving of praise.

Especially in today's frustratingly gridlocked political environment, Lincoln is timelier than ever. It gives us hope that government can accomplish great things even as it drags itself through the muck and strain of corruption.

While Spielberg captures a time, Day-Lewis captures another brilliant performance, and some of the supporting actors may capture Oscar nominations, the film didn't capture my soul the way I was hoping.

The film presents Abraham Lincoln's deliberations as a function of his innate morality, as well as an emotional rightness.

A fascinating history lesson taking place mostly in the backrooms of Washington.

Good film, but 'Lincoln' is not a movie about Abraham Lincoln - it's about a man in an Abe costume posing as someone who had overwhelming love for African-Americans, when in reality that was far from the Lincoln documented in history.

It's a superior achievement for Kushner, and makes for one of the best of Spielberg's "serious" movies.

A paternalistic Lincoln who freed the slaves? Bad movie and worse politics...

An Oscar-ready historical masterpiece that does double duty as a history lesson and as a reminder of the paralytic limitations of a house divided.

Spielberg's Lincoln shows us that the nasty in-fighting of American party politics is not restricted to the modern era.?

A talky, 150-minute affair but not without interesting modern-day ironies and parallels. One needs to take the one-sided history depicted with a grain of salt.

If this exquisite, immersive, fully entertaining, dramatized account of real events can't get you excited about history... nothing will.

Day-Lewis' wise, rustic, gnarled Lincoln truly seems a creature from another age; remarkably, there's no vanity in the actor's somewhat hobbled gait or high, thin voice.

There is directorial mastery here, and, even for those like me for whom the power of Lincoln is a percolating realization, one thing is certain: The performance by Daniel Day-Lewis is astonishing.

Daniel Day-Lewis reaches new acting heights as Lincoln while Sally Field matches him talent for talent as Mary Todd Lincoln.

This is a surprisingly bad movie.

Never before in American cinema have politics and poetry combined to make such spellbinding bedfellows.

[Day-Lewis] brings humanity and warmth to a man too often made static by history.

The weight of history is certainly present in every scene, but so are the undeniable correlations between past and present that make it feel so immediate and pertinent.

The very talented cast of this film is put to good use, thanks to Spielberg's sure direction and a strong script, written by Tony Kushner ('Munich').

The 2012 Apocalypse, or why the world won't end this week

If you believe The Daily Mail, we?re all convinced that the world is going to end on 21st December 2012. Apparently people are stockpiling food and weapons, flocking to remote villages and heading for mystical peaks from whence ?an extra-terrestrial mothership? housed for centuries in an alien temple inside the mountain ?will pluck believers to safety?. ?With ten days to go before the Mayan apocalypse supposedly casts Earth into oblivion, time is running out for believers to find alien salvation? the Mail proclaims.

So why all the recent hysteria? According to Maya myth, the world was created on 11 August 3114 BC in the Gregorian Calendar; or 13.0.0.0.0 by the Maya count. This creation was the fourth incarnation of the world, the previous age having ended after the thirteenth b?ak?tun (a c.400-year cycle). On 21st December, it will once again be 13.0.0.0.0 and the ?Great Cycle? will be completed, bringing the thirteenth b?ak?tun of the current age to an end. Some translations of the glyphs from a partially illegible Maya stela suggest that the end of the present b?ak?tun will see the ?descent? of the god Bolon Yookte? K?Uh (sometimes translated as the ?Nine-Footed God?). This convergence of dates and prophecies has been seen as marking the transition to the next world, and hence the end of this one.

For many years, a scarcity of Maya calendrical references to dates post-2012 was also seen as a possible indication of a cataclysmic end to the world this December. But, quite apart from the question of practicalities (I mean, how many of you have a calendar on your desk which reaches to 2406 ? a b?ak?tun from now?) even this tenuous evidence has recently been refuted ?by the discovery of an early Maya mural in Xult?n which includes calendrical and cosmological calculations stretching some 7,000 years into the future. Certainly, the Precolumbian Maya might have considered 21st December 2012 a symbolic date, a moment of potential transformation. But does that mean they thought the world would end?

It?s easy to mock The Daily Mail (far, far too easy) but for some people, the prospect of apocalypse is a very real fear. David Morrison, of NASA?s Astrobiology Institute, says that they have received thousands of questions about the 2012 doomsday predictions, some of them from people who have considered suicide, because they are so terrified by the horrific idea of living through the end of the world. Some people are clearly deeply troubled by the recent obsession with apocalypse, but that the origins of their fear lie in a highly disputed and extremely tenuous Maya prophecy is a fascinating and baffling situation.

According to the Maya legends eloquently recorded in the sixteenth-century Popol Vuh, humans were created in this, the fourth world, when the gods moulded our ancestors from maize dough (after unsuccessful attempts at fashioning men from monkeys, wood and clay). I doubt that many of the so-called ?preppers? who are ?preparing? themselves for the end of the world or an ascent into the stars with their alien overlords believe in the Precolumbian myths of creation, so (even if we had conclusive evidence of a Maya belief in a 2012 apocalypse) why would they believe in the myths of destruction? And if you don?t believe me, why not listen to the Maya themselves. Modern-day Maya see the ?apocalypse? as a European invention. For them, the end of the b?ak?tun is a time of renewal and celebration, a new beginning, not an end.

So, despite the spectre of impending doom, I?m going to carry on Christmas shopping, and looking forward to my imminent research leave, secure in the knowledge that the ancient Maya didn?t believe the world will end on Friday. And even if they did, I don?t.

Play SNES Games online with friends

Back in the days when Nintendo and Sega ruled the console gaming world, I used to play all kinds of SNES games with friends. I remember well how we played games like Super Mario World, Mario Kart or Donkey Kong Country with each other on a single system. It was lots of fun, not because the games had super shiny graphics and all, but because game design, replayability and the overall experience was better than anything you get today.

While you can buy SNES games as virtual console games for Nintendo Wii or Wii U, I think that Nintendo failed to tap into the online gaming market. Yes, the Wii has Internet play and all, but as far as I know, you can?t really fire up Super Mario World on the system to play the game with a friend in another apartment, town or even continent.

I can name more than ten games out of my head that I?d like to play with friends online but it seems that this is not possible right now.

Enter SNESbox. I discovered the service a while ago and was not really sure if I should write about it as there is a high chance that it will get pulled if Nintendo finds out about it. Then again, Nintendo may be clever this time and broker a deal with the service instead.

So, SNESbox provides you online access to 1861 Nintendo SNES games that you can play on the site either with a keyboard or a gamepad that you connect to your computer. What makes this service special is that you can play games with a friend together. It provides you with online multiplayer? for all the best ? English ? SNES games.

The site offers all classic SNES games, from Super Mario World and Kart over Mortal Kombat and Donkey Kong to Contra and Zelda. Not all games are multiplayer games, and the selection of single player games is excellent as well. I have already mentioned Zelda, but you also get access to excellent games like Chrono Trigger, Super Metroid, Earthbound, all Final Fantasy games or Super Star Wars.

To play a game simply click on it. It takes a couple of seconds to load the emulator and game. First thing you see is the selection menu where you can select to play alone or with a friend via the Internet. If you select the multiplayer option, a custom url is generated that you need to provide your friend with. You can send it via email, chat or any other form of communication that you have available.? The game then waits for your friend to load the link before it starts. Single and multiplayer are from here on out identical again.

First time users need to configure the keyboard setup first before they can play. A click on load defaults here sets the keys to the defaults, which means you move with WASD and control the A,B,X and Y buttons with K,J,I and U. Select is set to T and Start to space. It is highly recommended to connect a gamepad to the PC though as it improves game play significantly.

play snes games online multiplayer

Games play in a small frame in the browser window by default. A fullscreen mode is available, but only if you connect a gamepad to the computer. Before you do that, you need to download a small file and run it on your computer. I have not tested that yet as I never tried to connect a pad to the PC before.

If you want to play with a friend, you have to select the multiplayer game mode the game provides you with. You share a single screen so that you always see what your friend is up to and vice versa. I have not tried Mario Kart yet but suppose it will use the split screen technique for multiplayer just like the original games did.

Note that saving games in the game itself does not appear to be working. You can however save the state of the game if you create an account with the site. When you do, that option becomes available at the bottom of the screen when you move the mouse over it.

For some games, saving is essential as you can?t really play them in one go.? To create an account click on the save game state icon when you play a game and then on the sign up link that appears next to sign in. Just enter a username, password and email address and you are good to go.

When you load a game that you saved previously, you get the option to load the game?s saved state instead to continue where you stopped playing the last time. Keep in mind that you only get one saved state per game.

A click on the settings button at the top opens a nav bar with a search option. If you are looking for a particular game, use it to find it.

secret of mana

What more? If you are more the NES kind of player, you can switch to the system at the top to play NES games online instead. Game selection is great and the two player over Internet option is available for these kind of games as well.

Emulation for the most part is great and fluent. When I tried Donkey Kong with a friend we heard a nerve wreaking sound every now and then which was not there in the original games. Our solution was to reduce the volume of the game to reduce its impact. Not a big problem as we talked a lot while playing anyway.

SNESbox provides you with the best SNES multiplayer gaming experience that you can get. While it is the online mode that sets it apart from other sites that let you play Super Nintendo games on the Internet, its excellent selection of games and ease of use make it the top destination for all things SNES and NES.

Now, I only wish the developers would create a Genesisbox, Amigabox and C-64box as well.

Utah State routs Toledo 41-15 in Idaho Potato Bowl

BOISE, Idaho (AP) ? Kerwynn Williams ran for 235 yards and three touchdowns and No. 18 Utah State won a bowl game for the first time in nearly 20 years, beating Toledo 41-15 on Saturday in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl.

The victory capped the best season in Utah State history. The Aggies finished 11-2, won the Western Athletic Conference title outright and had their first bowl victory since 1993.

Chuckie Keeton scored on a 62-yard run to put Utah State up 7-3, and Williams, the game's MVP, sparked a 28-point fourth quarter for Utah State when he broke through the defense and raced 63 yards for a touchdown to put the Aggies up 20-9. Williams, who had 18 carries, followed that with TD runs of 5 and 25 yards. Keeton ran for 92 yards and was 21-of-31 passing for 229 yards.

Toledo (9-4) was able to move the ball and made five trips inside the red zone. But penalties and miscues forced the Rockets to settle for Jeremiah Detmer's three field goals.

The Rockets' only touchdown came when Bernard Reedy returned a fourth-quarter kickoff 87 yards. Reedy was the only big producer on a Toledo offense held to 315 total yards. Reedy had 51 yards rushing and caught six passes for 62 yards.

Toledo quarterback Austin Dantin, who started in place of the injured Terrence Owens, was 12 of 21 passing for 132 yards. Dantin threw an interception in the third quarter to end a promising scoring drive and was replaced by Owens in the fourth quarter.

Owens moved the Rockets on his first possession, but another red-zone opportunity was squelched when the Aggies snuffed Owens for no gain on a fourth-and-1 play from the 9.

Toledo played without two top players. Linebacker Dan Molls, the nation's leading tackler, had a concussion on the opening kickoff and didn't return. Minutes later, running back David Fluellen, the nation's eighth-leading rusher, went down with an ankle injury.

The Aggies pulled away in the fourth quarter when Williams, held in check much of the game, broke off several long runs. After his 63-yard TD run, Williams broke through the line on the next Utah State possession, dashing 56 yards before being tackled at the 5. He scored one play later, then scored his final touchdown 1:30 later.

Utah State rolled up 582 yards on offense, including 353 yards on the ground.

Pentagon to send missiles, 400 troops to Turkey

INCIRLIK AIR BASE, Turkey (AP) ? The U.S. will send two batteries of Patriot missiles and 400 troops to Turkey as part of a NATO force meant to protect Turkish territory from potential Syrian missile attack, the Pentagon said Friday.

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta signed a deployment order en route to Turkey from Afghanistan calling for 400 U.S. soldiers to operate two batteries of Patriots at undisclosed locations in Turkey, Pentagon press secretary George Little told reporters flying with Panetta.

Germany and the Netherlands have already agreed to provide two batteries of the U.S.-built defense systems and send up to 400 German and 360 Dutch troops to man them, bringing the total number of Patriot batteries slated for Turkey to six.

German lawmakers voted 461-86 Friday to approve the deployment of two Patriot missile batteries. The mandate allows Germany to deploy a maximum 400 soldiers through January 2014. NATO foreign ministers endorsed Turkey's request for the Patriots on Nov. 30.

A number of Syrian shells have landed in Turkish territory since the conflict in the Arab state began in March 2011. Turkey has condemned the Syrian regime of President Bashar Assad, supported Syrian rebels and provided shelter to Syrian refugees. Ankara is particularly worried that Assad may get desperate enough to use chemical weapons.

During a brief stop at Incirlik Air Base, Panetta told U.S. troops that Turkey might need the Patriots, which are capable of shooting down shorter-range ballistic missiles as well as aircraft.

He said he approved the deployment "so that we can help Turkey have the kind of missile defense it may very well need to deal with the threats coming out of Syria," he said.

In a statement issued Friday NATO spokeswoman Oana Lungescu said "the deployment will be defensive only."

"It will not support a no-fly zone or any offensive operation. Its aim is to deter any threats to Turkey, to defend Turkey's population and territory and to de-escalate the crisis on NATO's south-eastern border," Lungescu said.

Panetta did not mention how soon the two Patriot batteries will head to Turkey or how long they might stay.

Earlier this week in Berlin, German Deputy Foreign Minister Michael Link told lawmakers that current plans call for the missile sites to be stationed at Kahramanmaras, about 60 miles north of Turkey's border with Syria. Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte said Thursday that the Netherlands, Germany and the U.S. are working closely with Turkey "to ensure that the Patriots are deployed as soon as possible." But he predicted they would not become operational before the end of January. Turkey joined NATO in 1952, three years after the alliance was formed.

At Incirlik Air Base, about 60 miles north of the Syrian border, an Air Force member asked Panetta what the US would do if Syria used chemical or biological weapons against the rebels. Panetta said he could not be specific in a public setting, but added, "we have drawn up plans" that give President Barack Obama a set of options in the event that U.S. intelligence shows that Syria intends to use such weapons.

Asked by another Air Force member whether he thought Syria would "react negatively" to the Patriot deployments, Panetta said, "I don't think they have the damn time to worry" about the Patriots since the regime's leaders are struggling to stay in power.

He indicated that Syria's reaction to the Patriots was not a major concern to him.

Separately, NATO will deploy its Airborne Warning and Control System aircraft, or AWACS, to Turkey on a training exercise this month, said a NATO official who spoke on condition of anonymity because alliance rules do not allow him to speak on the record.

He said the exercise was not connected to the deployment of the Patriots.

The aircraft, which can detect launches of ground-to-ground missiles, will exercise command and control procedures as well as test the connectivity of various NATO and Turkish communications and data sharing systems, the official said.

Ghana Business News ? ILO urges Ghana to domesticate ...

You Are Here: Home ? General News ? ILO urges Ghana to domesticate international conventions on child labour

Page last updated at Thursday, December 13, 2012 7:07 AM //

Ghana has been advised to domesticate the various International Labour Organisation (ILO) conventions on Child Labour to make their application easy and effective in eliminating the worst forms of child labour from the society.

Mr Stephen McClelland, Chief Technical Advisor of the International Programme on the Elimination of Child Labour (IPEC), Ghana and ILO, asked the Government of Ghana to turn off the tide that filled the labour market with children who were supposed to be in school.

According to him, the achievement of total elimination of the worst forms of child labour would remain a mirage if the remote causes, which included extreme poverty and high illiteracy levels in most deprived African societies, were not tackled.

Mr McClelland was addressing a joint national workshop organised by the Ghana Employers? Association (GEA) and the Trades Union Congress (TUC) to launch the Employers? and Workers? Handbook on hazardous child labour in Accra on Wednesday.

He said domestication of the law was critical and asked that employers and workers came together to design and implement a national plan of action to be enforced in the communities.

?You can have the best policies and laws, but if it is not put into practice, it would be in vain,? he said.

He said the ILO, for nearly a century, had been setting standards for child labour and fortunately, Ghana was among the countries to have ratified its Convention 138 which dealt with the minimum age and Convention 182 on the worst forms of child labour.

Yet, Ghana has not made much progress with regards to effective implementation of the convention, he said.

The 54-page Handbook, which was realised within the framework of the project on ?Social Partnership and????? Advocacy to Tackle Child Labour? and funded by Irish Aid, provides an overview of child labour as defined by ILO conventions.

It describes how employers and workers are working jointly to combat hazardous child labour in key sectors, such as agriculture, construction, mining and manufacturing, and makes suggestions on how its cooperation could be strengthened in the future.

The suggestions include the development and implementation of the national hazardous child labour lists, the establishment of workplace safety and health committees and improvements in collective bargaining agreements.

Mr Alex Frimpong, Chief Executive of GEA, who launched the handbook, expressed the hope that the outcome of their collective efforts as social partners would be more than their individual efforts as employers? and workers? organisations.

He said the GEA was committed to partnering the TUC to eliminate child labour because businesses thrived in healthy societies, but many social vices such as armed robbery, prostitution and drug abuse thrived in societies where child labour was widespread and retarded business growth.

He, therefore, said it was critical to protect children from all forms of hazardous works in order to preserve them as the future of the economy depended on them.

Alberta Laryea Gyan, Head of International Affairs, TUC, said the Union was determined to eliminate child labour because it undermined decent work and impacted negatively on the fundamental human rights of such children to education and total development.

The GEA and the TUC signed a Bipartite Declaration on child labour, to re-dedicate and commit themselves to the fight against all forms of child labour and also acknowledge that both employers? and workers? organisations have significant role to play in combating child labour among other things.
